Topline isn’t just about appearance 👀

A horse’s topline can tell us a lot about:
• posture
• strength
• movement patterns
• comfort under saddle

Loss of topline can happen for many reasons including:
• age
• weakness
• compensation
• incorrect work
• discomfort
• poor saddle fit

Building and maintaining topline takes time, consistency and correct management🤩

Massage can help support muscular relaxation and comfort alongside appropriate exercise and care✨

🔥 The importance of a proper warm-up 🔥

A good warm-up is one of the easiest ways to protect your horse’s muscles and improve performance—yet it’s often rushed or overlooked.
Before asking your horse to work, their muscles need time to loosen, stretch, and get blood flowing💪🏼

An example of a simple, effective warm-up routine:
• Start with 10–15 minutes of active walk (long rein, encouraging stretch)
• Add large circles and changes of rein to gently mobilise the body
• Introduce trot gradually, keeping it relaxed and forward
• Allow your horse to stretch long and low
🚫 Avoid going straight into collected work or intense schooling🚫

A proper warm-up helps:
✔ Reduce risk of injury
✔ Improve flexibility
✔ Create a softer, more willing horse

Think of it like going to the gym—you wouldn’t skip your warm-up, and neither should your horse 👀

Aftercare matters just as much as the massage itself 🐴

Your horse has just had a treatment to release tension, improve circulation, and support muscle recovery—now it’s your job as the owner/carer to help them get the full benefit. Here’s what to do next:

🔹Allow time to process
Massage stimulates circulation and lymphatic flow, so your horse may feel relaxed, sleepy, or even slightly sensitive. Give them time to chill—no immediate intense work.

🔹Light movement is best
Gentle turnout or a relaxed walk helps prevent stiffness and supports the body as it adjusts. Avoid hard schooling or heavy exercise for at least 24 hours (or as advised).

🔹Keep water available
Hydration is key! Massage helps flush toxins, so make sure your horse has plenty of fresh water to support this natural process.

🔹Watch for changes
You may notice improvements in movement, posture, or behaviour—but sometimes mild soreness can occur as muscles rebalance. This is normal, but always monitor and report anything unusual.

🔹Follow tailored advice
Every horse is different. Stick to any specific aftercare or exercise plans given to you—they’re designed for your horse’s individual needs.

🔹Check tack & routine
Now is a great time to reassess saddle fit, workload, and daily management to help maintain the benefits of the treatment.

A massage is not just the moment—it’s part of an ongoing journey to better movement, comfort, and performance🤩

🏇Helping Your Horse Recover After Competition🏇🏼

Competitions can be exciting and rewarding, but they also place a lot of physical demand on your horse. Proper recovery after an event is essential to keep them comfortable, prevent injury, and support long-term performance.
Here are a few simple ways you can help your horse recover after a big day:

1️⃣ Cool Down Properly
After competing, allow your horse time to walk and gradually bring their heart rate down. A proper cool-down helps reduce stiffness and supports healthy circulation through tired muscles.

2️⃣ Hydration & Nutrition
Make sure your horse has access to fresh water and their usual feed routine. Electrolytes may also help replenish what was lost through sweat during intense work.

3️⃣ Check for Tightness or Sensitivity
Run your hands gently over your horse’s back, neck, and hindquarters. If you notice flinching, heat, or tight muscles, it may be a sign your horse would benefit from targeted bodywork.

4️⃣ Gentle Movement the Next Day
A light hack or turnout the following day can help loosen muscles and prevent stiffness after competition.

5️⃣ Consider Equine Massage Therapy
Massage can help release muscle tension, improve circulation, and support faster recovery after competition. Regular sessions can also help maintain flexibility and identify potential issues early.

Every horse works hard to give their best in the ring – giving them the right recovery support helps them stay happy, comfortable, and ready for the next ride🐴🤩

If you’d like to learn more about how equine massage can support your horse’s performance and recovery, feel free to get in touch.

As an equine massage therapist, one thing I see regularly is muscular tension that develops when horses are worked on the same surface day after day.
Just like human athletes, horses benefit from variety in their training environment. Different surfaces encourage the body to work in different ways, helping to support muscle development, balance, and overall comfort.
Small changes to your horse’s routine — such as incorporating grass work, road work, tracks, gentle hills, or different arena footing — can make a big difference to their long-term soundness and way of going.
Horses that experience varied training often show:
🐎 Better muscle balance
🐎 Improved coordination and stability
🐎 Reduced areas of muscular tightness
🐎 Greater overall suppleness
From a bodywork perspective, these are the horses that often present with fewer chronic tension patterns and move more freely through their bodies.
Swipe through to learn more about why working on different surfaces matters for your horse’s health and performance.

💬 I’d love to hear from you:
What surfaces do you regularly work your horse on? Arena, grass, tracks, hills, or a mix?
