✨ What is the “normal” length of a menstrual cycle? ✨
When we talk about the menstrual cycle, it isn’t just about your period – it’s a carefully balanced hormonal process made up of four phases:
🩸 Menstrual phase – bleeding begins
🌱 Follicular phase – hormones rise, follicles mature
🥚 Ovulation – an egg is released
🌙 Luteal phase – the body prepares for implantation
(Cycle phase lengths can vary – something I’ll cover in another post.)
📅 The average menstrual cycle length is around 28 days, but anything between 21–34 days is generally considered normal.
👉 Cycles that are 35 days or longer are classed as long cycles and can sometimes indicate delayed ovulation or anovulation and / or hormonal imbalance. This can impact egg quality, timing of ovulation and overall fertility.
💭 If you have long cycles, you’re not alone – and it’s something I see very regularly in clinic.
🌿 Through a course of acupuncture, I’ve supported many women whose cycles were 35–45+ days to gradually shorten and regulate.
✨ For the majority, cycles have reduced to around 28 / 29 days, which is often a much healthier rhythm for hormone balance, ovulation timing and fertility potential.
✔️ A more regular cycle
✔️ More predictable ovulation
✔️ Improved conditions for egg quality
💬 If this sounds like you, and something here resonates, acupuncture may be a gentle, natural way to support your body and bring your cycle back into balance.
