Today is World Diabetes Day, which takes place each year on the 14th November and is a global moment to raise awareness and drive action for people living with diabetes. This year’s theme, Support for diabetes in the workplace, highlights a significant fact: 7 in 10 people with diabetes are of working age.

Regular diabetic eye screening is vital for early detection of changes that could impact daily life, safety, and work performance. Employers play an essential role in supporting staff to attend their screening appointments without stress or barriers.

1. Promote Awareness
Help staff understand the purpose of screening: early detection saves sight. Consider sharing internal messages, posters, or reminders during national awareness events such as World Diabetes Day.
2. Encourage Safe and Confidential Conversations
Employees may not always feel comfortable discussing their diabetes. Provide a supportive, confidential environment where staff can share adjustments they may need.
3. Allow Time Off for Screening
Allow reasonable paid time off for employees to attend, especially since dilation eye drops may temporarily affect their vision.
4. Provide Role-Specific Adjustments After Screening
Following dilation drops, some employees may experience blurred vision for several hours. Consider temporary adjustments such as avoiding driving tasks, machine operation, or visually demanding duties on the day of screening.
5. Share Useful Information
Provide staff with easy access to local diabetic eye screening service information.
6. Foster a Supportive Workplace Culture
A workplace that openly supports health and wellbeing improves morale and staff retention. Small actions—awareness messages, flexible scheduling, or signposting to resources—can make a significant difference.

This year the theme for World Diabetes Day is ‘Diabetes and Wellbeing’.

This theme centres on people being able to access diabetes care and support so that everyone with diabetes has the chance to live well.

Diabetes can lead to blindness, but the damage happens over time and in the beginning it does not have any symptoms.

Eye Drops

Tropicamide are harmless eye drops, used to dilate the pupils in diabetic eye screening.

Allergies to its ingredients are extremely rare, however, please remember, when your pupils are dilated, your vision will be blurry and your eyes will be more sensitive to light.

It is very important that you do NOT drive after your eye screening appointment.

We would encourage you not to drive for 4-6 hours following your appointment.

🩺 November is Diabetes Awareness Month! 💙
Join us as we share facts and insights throughout the month to raise awareness and understanding of diabetes - a condition that affects millions of lives every day.

🔍 What’s the difference between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes?
➡️ Type 1 Diabetes

An autoimmune condition where the body attacks insulin-producing cells in the pancreas.
Usually diagnosed in children or young adults, but it can occur at any age.
People with Type 1 do not produce insulin and must take it daily to survive.
Symptoms often appear suddenly and include excessive thirst, frequent urination, fatigue, and weight loss.
Not caused by lifestyle, and currently no cure.

➡️ Type 2 Diabetes

A metabolic condition where the body becomes resistant to insulin or doesn’t produce enough.
More common in adults, but increasingly seen in younger people.
Often linked to lifestyle factors like diet, physical activity, and weight.
It can be managed with lifestyle changes, oral medications, and sometimes insulin.
Symptoms develop gradually and may include fatigue, slow wound healing, and increased thirst.

📊 Over 90% of people with diabetes have Type 2, but both types require lifelong care and support.
Let’s break the stigma, share knowledge, and support those living with diabetes. 💙
📅 Stay tuned for daily facts and tips throughout November!
