How does the nervous system impact a child’s behaviour?
Half term can be wonderful… and also a lot.
Routine changes, later bedtimes, busy days out, more noise, more stimulation. All of this increases the load on a child’s nervous system.
When the nervous system feels overwhelmed, behaviour often changes. You might notice more meltdowns, more sensitivity, more movement, more withdrawal or difficulty settling. This is not about a child choosing to behave badly. It is often a sign their system is working hard to adapt.
A regulated nervous system helps a child cope with stress, adjust to change and return to calm more easily after big emotions. During school holidays, that adaptability is tested.
Supporting children through these shifts is not about perfection. It is about helping their nervous system feel safe, steady and supported.
