Hay fever season is beginning, and many people ask about the so-called “hay fever injection”.
The injection commonly referred to as the hay fever jab is a steroid injection called Kenalog.
Although it is sometimes offered privately, it is not licensed in the UK for the treatment of hay fever and is not recommended by the NHS or allergy specialists.
This is because the medication remains active in the body for several weeks and can cause systemic side effects, including effects on blood sugar, infection risk and suppression of the body’s natural steroid production.
Once it has been administered there is no way to remove it from your system so whatever side effects you have, you are stuck with until it slowly works its way out of your body.
The reassuring news is that most hay fever symptoms can be managed very effectively with safer treatments, including modern antihistamines, steroid nasal sprays and eye drops.
At Montpellier Medical we are always happy to discuss symptoms and help develop a personalised approach to managing seasonal allergies.
