Huge congratulations to Francesco Lanzi of our St John Ambulance Cymru Aberystwyth LINKS Division, who recently won the 'Young Volunteer of the Year' category at the WCVA CGGC Welsh Charity Awards 2025.

Francesco is studying Economics at Aberystwyth University and volunteers for eight organisations including Dyfed Drug and Alcohol Service, Cymru Sport and is a lead volunteer with the Undeb Aberystwyth A-Team, as well as well as being one of our dedicated .

Franceso said: "For me initially, volunteering was a way to start getting involved as I basically knew nobody being an international student.

"It didn’t start as a “I want to volunteer thing” but I decided, when I moved countries, that I wanted to be more outgoing and that I would try to say 'no' to stuff as little as possible, so when I got asked if I could help with something, or if I was interested in getting involved, I’ve just tried to say yes as much as I can.

Asked if he'd recommend other students join St John he said: "Definitely, other than the fact that you actually get valuable skills, I think it can really help with finding purpose with helping people.

"I had a lot of fun at the Aber 7s Rugby last year and in Freshers' Week this year. I’d also say that I quite like a day training session, yes they’re quite long but they’re really interesting and then you get to try it yourself, which is always really cool."

Llongyfarchiadau Francesco!

Today is and a valuable opportunity to highlight the great work of our very own Menopause Champion, Lisa Nicholls. Lisa regularly attends training courses and monthly networking events with fellow Menopause Champions from across the UK (and attended one this very day), so that if one of our ask for help, she is able to provide the support they need. As part of her work as one of our Workplace Trainers, Lisa also runs Menopause Awareness training courses, so if your organisation needs support in this area, DM us for further details. Diolch Lisa!

Last weekend we also had a member on duty at Llantarnam walking football event, helping another Division, and a member undertaking practical training with members from across Wales in how to defuse difficult situations and keep safe if they are faced with aggressive or violent members of public. (We don't often encounter aggression or violence but it is possible, perhaps due to injuries or alcohol, at any duty.)
