An Apprenticeship with Sorrow: 7-Week Peer Support Circle

A communal space to honor grief as a natural part of being human, using Francis Weller's The Wild Edge of Sorrow and his Five Gates of Grief.

Facilitated by Somatic Therapist Ali Rose and assisted by Shiatsu practitioner Georgina Holt at The Soma Rooms Chepstow - offered freely to our community.

No one is exempt from the grief of our times.

Through reading, reflection, and deep listening, we'll explore grief in its widest sense - from personal loss to collective sorrow to ancestral wounds.

This is peer support, not a therapy group - you may wish to consider what other support you may need while we explore grief together.

If you're interested in joining us, please contact @⁨Ali Rose⁩

I'm so pleased to let you know about some workshops I've been developing with fellow Shiatsu practitioners John Brooks and Vicky Evans.

We have been awarded a bursary from Shiatsu Society UK which means we can offer these sessions for free to anyone living with mental or physical health challenges, or caring for someone who is.

DOWNSHIFT is a free, practical workshop designed to help you gently shift gear from survival mode to inner calm. It’s not about pushing through, it's designed to help you learn, adopt and incorporate simple, body‑based tools to calm your mind, reconnect with your body, and remember your strength all at your own pace.

You can join in fully, or simply come, rest, and observe. Either way, you’ll be in a safe, welcoming space.

Spaces are limited, so please book if this speaks to you — or pass it on to someone you know who might benefit.

A butterfly is not a caterpillar that grew wings. The caterpillar spins a chrysalis, and, within its safety, disintegrates into goop. Only the imaginal discs remain; these hold the knowledge of the butterfly it will become as it rebuilds its new form. Much is recognisable, but it has fundamentally changed in behaviour as well as looks.

When we go through change, there is a similar process of finding safety so we can digest what has gone before. Sometimes it might feel like we totally disintegrate - it's part of the process. Like the butterfly, part of us knows how to rebuild.

All change can upend life in unexpected ways. Whether it's the birth of a longed-for child, a career change, a move to a new area, ageing and menopause, or the breakdown of a relationship, bereavement or serious illness.

Balance - the moments between the movements
I've been thinking a lot about balance lately, and the Spring Equinox feels like a good moment to share some of these as we go through this moment of day and night being equal, and move into the longer days.

As harmony is created by the space between the notes, balance is made not from fixing in place, but from the moments between the movements.at we think of as balance are the moments of stillness in between. Your body performs myriad actions to maintain homeostasis - keeping within the limited ranges of temperature, fluid balance and chemical levels that you need to be well.

Living between 2 big tidal rivers brings the ebb and flow of nature into my daily awareness as I cross the water and spend time by the shore. The flows of tide and river often make the surface turbulent and chaotic but there are periods each day when the tide turns and the churning water turns to glass. It can feel like time standing still before it begins to flow out the other way.

In our the rhythm of our bodies, between the in breath and out breath, without consciously holding, there is a similar fleeting moment of balance. If we can catch these moments, like the river, and the equinox, the stillness can seem to expand. Noticing these moments brings me a sense of calm and connectedness to the world around me. Zoom in the rhythm of exchange within our cells, zoom out to the rhythm of the seasons.

As harmony is created by the space between the notes, balance is created not from fixing in place, but from the moments between the movements.

In a shiatsu treatment I work with the shifting flows of energy. I can no more 'balance your energy' than I can stand still without making constant micro-adjustments. What I aim to do is encourage a balance between the ebb and flow, and bring space to the pauses.

Shiatsu beginnings

I have been fascinated by Shiatsu since my first treatment, which seemed to open up space for new possibilities. The time away from the demands of everyday life, the relief from physical symptoms, and the deep relaxation allowed me to start to dream.

I continued to be drawn to places on my body - that place on my wrist that seemed to alleviate migraine... the place in my shoulder that deepened my breath...

Three years ago I woke up wondering why I wasn’t studying Shiatsu. It was a question I couldn’t answer, so here I am, nearing the end of my third year of training.

I love sharing the benefits of Shiatsu in my practice, and am happy to be able to offer low cost treatments while I finish my formal studies.
