Last week, The Runnymede Hospital hosted a 'Build a Bug' contest across all departments to celebrate International Infection Prevention and Control Week 2025.

Staff were encouraged to tap into their creativity by designing a bug or another infectious organism and learning key facts about it. The model bugs were judged, and the Pharmacy Team received first prize for their model of the Influenza virus made using a pumpkin!

An additional prize was awarded for Best Educational Speech, which went to the Imaging Department. Their presentation incorporated the themes of IIPW: protect, prevent, prevail, highlighting the importance of IPC in keeping our patients, visitors and staff safe.

It’s International Infection Prevention Week!

This week, we’re celebrating the people and practices that help prevent the spread of infection. From hand hygiene to vaccination, infection prevention is essential to keeping everyone safe and well.

At Runnymede Hospital, we are committed to delivering high-quality care and ensuring the best possible outcomes for our patients. A key part of this commitment is maintaining infection prevention and control (IPC) measures to reduce the risk of healthcare-associated infections.

To mark the occasion, our IPC Lead, Emmajane, is hosting a fun and educational ‘Build a Bug’ contest. Staff are encouraged to tap into their creativity by designing a bug or another infectious organism and learning key facts about it.

As part of the challenge, participants will explore how their bug spreads and refresh their knowledge of the IPC measures needed to prevent transmission, such as hand hygiene and transmission-based precautions.

Whether you're a patient, visitor, or member of staff, your actions matter. Together, we can reduce the risk of infection and protect those around us.
