Why Do We Carry Coffins on Our Shoulders?
It’s more than just tradition — it’s a final act of love and honour

Lifting the coffin onto our shoulders symbolizes the weight of our loss and the respect we hold for the one who has passed. It’s a way for loved ones to say, “You mattered. We’ll carry you, even now.”

In many cultures, this act represents spiritual elevation, communal grief, and a deep personal connection. It reminds us that mourning is not something we do alone — we carry it together.

A solemn gesture. A shared burden. A farewell with dignity. 🕊️

"What should I wear to a funeral?"

Traditionally, wearing black or dark clothing is a way of showing respect and mourning. It’s still the most common choice — smart, subdued, and understated.
While black is still traditional, many families now choose something more personal and meaningful to them.

💙 Some families choose a particular colour – often a favourite of their loved one, or a colour of their favourite sports team.
💛 Others encourage bright clothing to reflect a life well lived, rather than a purely sombre occasion.
🧥 And sometimes, the message is simply: “Come as you are.”

The most important thing is always to respect the wishes of the family. If there’s a dress code, it’s usually shared in the funeral notice or by word of mouth — but if you’re unsure, it’s perfectly okay to ask.

Whatever you wear, what matters most is your presence, your support, and the care you bring by showing up.

If you ever have questions like this or feel unsure about any part of a funeral, please don’t hesitate to reach out — we’re always here to help.

What colours or themes have you opted for at your loved ones funeral?

A piper at a funeral is a common and poignant tradition, particularly in Scottish and Irish cultures, where the bagpipes are used to add a solemn and emotional touch to the ceremony. The piper's music can accompany various parts of the funeral, from the arrival of mourners to the procession to the gravesite, offering comfort and a sense of closure.
Yesterday we were privileged to work with Piper McKay who delivers a First Class Bagpiping service.

In Tune, On Point, Immaculate and Trusted.

🌤 Sunday Morning Thoughts 🌤

As funeral directors, we’re often reminded just how precious and short life can be.

So today,we just want to say this…

Be kind. Be present. Make the effort.
Call that friend, visit that family member, smile at a stranger.
You only get one life—so live it with love, laughter, and purpose.

Let’s not wait for a reason to show we care.
Make today count.

Wishing you all a peaceful and positive Sunday

We never expect thanks, the greatest privilege is simply being trusted to help during such an important and emotional time.
But when a family takes the time to send a card or leave a review, it truly means the world to us.
We are always humbled by the kind words we receive. It's a gentle reminder of why we do what we do.
It’s an honour to be there when families need us most, and moments like this are very special to all of us❤🎩

‘STOP - THERE’S A HEARSE COMING.’
That’s what you would hear traditionally on streets and country roads years ago when a hearse would approach. It was lovely to see respect to the people within the community who’d lost a loved one.
Unfortunately, we see it now as Funeral Directors less & less. We’d love to see it back - it’s a beautiful gesture to show respect to the family and the person who has died

It’s okay to cry. It’s okay to laugh. It’s okay to remember.

Grief doesn’t follow a schedule, healing takes time, and that’s perfectly okay.
