You may be aware of the article on the BBC about the early retirement of Lions footballer Ellen White following a pneumothorax (collapsed lung) caused by acupuncture.

The British Acupuncture Council confirms that all its members have received training in medical sciences which make them aware of the risks. Safety is paramount in every treatment and members follow a strict Code of Practice to ensure the risks are kept to an absolute minimum. Nevertheless, every patient is unique and incidents like this do occur - rarely.

According to this Taiwanese study*, the incidence rates of iatrogenic ("treatment-caused") pneumothorax were 0.87 per 1,000,000 acupuncture treatments overall and 1.75 per 1,000,000 acupuncture treatments in "at-risk" anatomical areas. In other words, the risk to you is almost negligible.

Ellen White was extremely unlucky.

I regularly get asked whether acupuncture helps with alleviating migraines and headaches.

Well, in my experience, acupuncture can be very helpful indeed in alleviating migraines and other sorts of headache, and there is published medical research to support this.

Even though it involves having pins put into your body, acupuncture has a remarkably calming and balancing effect, and can help without any of the side effects we associate with conventional medication.
