Sacroiliac Joint (SIJ) pain during & after during pregnancy is unfortunately not unusual โน๏ธ
Your Sacroiliac joint connects your sacrum (bone at the base of your spine) to your ilium (the large pelvic bones). During pregnancy, hormonal changes loosen the ligaments preparing the pelvis for childbirth. This increased flexibility in the pelvic joints can lead to the joint becoming strained or irritated.
Common symptoms of sacroiliac pain are:
๐น Pain and discomfort in the lower back, bottom and sometimes travelling down the legs (often one side more than the other)
๐น Pain can vary from a dull ache to sharp, shooting sensations
๐น Pain standing from seated position, climbing strairs or walking for extended periods
๐น Pain standing on one leg such as when putting on your pants/socks/shoes, or single leg exercises at the gym
๐น Pain getting in/out of car or bed
You may need physiotherapy including physical hands on treatment or massage. Support devices are also available. HOWEVER SIJ pain can also be treated through pelvic stabilising exercises and core exercise in a yoga class.
