Rob Hardy, Dip NLC IHS. Well, firstly I am a fully qualified IHS certified Nutrition & Lifestyle Coach, based in Chester in the UK. My unique approach (see my Testim

onials page at www.enhancedenergy.co.uk/testimonials) is based on gaining a deep understanding of your particular likes, dislikes, daily schedule, and previous experience – and then working with you to customise a strategy that you will find easy to integrate into your daily life. I use industry-leading ‘Nutritics’ dietary analysis software to help you improve your diet, and we also undertake a comprehensive lifestyle analysis, covering exercise & movement, sleep, stress & relaxation, energy levels and environmental toxins. The aim is to make the process both enjoyable and inspiring – no more grinding workouts or miserable dieting required! My approach is ‘diet agnostic’ – I’m not going to recommend that you cut out entire food-groups or have to introduce new foods that you don’t like – but rather by becoming familiar with your personal preferences, I can use this insight to recommend foods and lifestyle tweaks that you will both enjoy and practically be able to implement consistently over the long-term to ensure that all nutritional and lifestyle bases are covered. My experience is that many of the standard ‘burn fat fast’ type programmes can be too aggressive and unrealistic for most people to be able to maintain into the long-term. Instead, my approach ensures that all the actions we put in place feel comfortable and sustainable – but also progressive, in order to promote enjoyable, motivating and long-term continual improvement. I am committed to helping you improve your health over the long-term, and for regular clients, who have paid for at least five hourly consultations with me, I offer lifetime email support for any ongoing brief queries you may have – as long as they can be answered fully and concisely in one paragraph or less. In short, if you have failed before, why not give my approach a try – you will be pleasantly surprised how easily we can integrate it into your life – and how ongoing tangible results will boost your self confidence to succeed. Tea & coffee will be available for 6.30pm, and we'll start at 7pm - aiming to be done by 9pm. We'll be making it super-practical covering lots of diet/ nutrition and exercise/ movement tips you can easily incorporate into your daily routine - as well as allowing plenty of time for your own questions.

Boughton Hall Cricket club has plenty of free parking, and is located just off the A51 as you’re heading out of Chester towards the M53/ A*5.

Entrance fee is just £10 - please could you DM me if you're interested in coming or would like a bit more information? And please do share this with anyone in your network you think may be interested in improving their physical and mental health. Looking forward to seeing you there!

Are you interested in attending an in-person presentation on how to optimise your nutrition/ diet and exercise - as well as tips on how to optimise sleep, circadian rhythms and cope better with stress? Including plenty of practical take-aways on how to boost up both your physical and mental health!

Myself and Bryn Monk are planning to begin a series of highly interactive presentations in the north-west region (venue TBC, but most likely in the Chester/ Merseyside/ North Wales area) over the coming months and we are currently in the process of gauging how much potential interest there is for something like this. We anticipate the presentations would be held once per month on a Monday-Thursday evening for a couple of hours (including time for questions).

Please could you let me know if you would be interested? (we anticipate only charging a nominal entrance fee of around £10 to cover the venue costs - we will be giving up our time for free!)

Please could you also forward this on to anyone in your friend/ family/ professional network who you think may find this useful? Many thanks everyone!

Seattle, 1996. I was driving along the West Coast of the US and Mike was a music journalist working at none other than 'The Stranger' in Seattle, covering the exploding Seattle music scene. I dropped in to 'hang-out' (man) with him for the weekend - as anyone who knew him can testify, Mike was always the undisputed king of cool. Which is precisely why...

Beautiful sunrise this morning. Standing here remembering my old mate Michael who I heard died this week. Remembering a lot of good times from Chester to York (never to be forgotten), Dallas, Seattle and a very entertaining year in London (when he lived in a pub) - he always had a knowing smile and never seemed to take anything too seriously... And of course our shared love of music (rarely the same stuff though...) Good times indeed. Life is short guys, let's make the most of every sunrise...

How’s about this for surreal… We were in the sea here (with my 87 year old mother in law!) and suddenly I noticed everyone running out. We managed to get out pretty quickly only to find out a hammerhead shark had been spotted (and caught on video on TikTok!) Felt like that scene in The Meg when everyone makes a run for the beach! Looking forward to getting back to Prestatyn TBH…

We’re here in Bogotá, Colombia to be with family for Christmas - but whilst indulging in plenty of local food I’m also keeping up a bit of exercise each day - today it’s pull-ups in an outdoor gym round the corner from the house!

Hope you’re all enjoying the lead-up to Christmas!

Protein bars – a healthy snack or waste of money?

Probably the single most common question I’ve been asked by clients over the last few months is what type of protein bar do I recommend?

In order to answer this question I take the client back to the first rule of effective nutrition – to always prioritise natural, wholefoods wherever possible – ie foods which the body has evolved to recognise and metabolise effectively (aside – have you read ‘Ultra-Processed People by Dr Chris van Tulleken yet?)

The problem with all ultra-processed foods, be they low-carb/ high protein/ low fat etc is that the body just doesn’t know how to correctly metabolise this strange concoction of ultra-processed ‘food-like’ chemicals – something that didn’t exist just 100 years ago (ie they have only existed for less than 0.05% of modern human evolution!) This creates a physiological ‘stress’ response to these novel food-like products.

Unfortunately all protein bars fall into this ‘ultra-processed’ category – containing some combo of highly processed protein, flavourings, sweeteners, preservatives, emulsifiers etc.. Not only has this concoction of chemicals been shown to lead to chronic health issues down the line, the fact is that rather than satisfying your appetite – it actually just makes you hungrier for more processed food later on!

So what should you do? Give your body what it recognises and keep your snacks as natural as possible! Much better (and cheaper!) protein-rich alternatives include raw nuts and seeds, low-fat cheese, natural Greek yogurt – even natural unflavoured ‘undenatured’ whey protein – which is a component of dairy which is minimally processed with no added ingredients. Unflavoured vegan protein shakes are an alternative option if you cannot consume any form of dairy (although note that many people with lactose intolerance can consume whey protein without any issues). Just combine with plenty of whole fruit, and you have a great energy-boosting snack that will keep you full for several hours – and is a lot cheaper than a protein bar!

So what about you – do you think it’s fine to have protein bars from time to time or do you think they’re a waste of money? Please let me know in the comments below!

And please check out Enhancedenergy.co.uk if you’d like to take out a 2-week free trial to my online membership programme which includes many more tips like this on how to work with your body instead of fighting against it!

Looking outside at the heavy rain, I'm so glad I managed to get out for a quick walk by the River Dee in Chester yesterday morning (I can't believe this was only yesterday!) Nothing better than a brisk walk first thing on a frosty morning to get the brain going!

Do you have any morning routines that help get you going? Let me know in the comments below, I'd be very interested to hear what you do...

A health coach eating all the mince pies??!

I had a lovely lunch out with my daughter last week – our annual tradition of sampling this year’s mince pies (which we both love!) at various coffee shops!

Reason for posting this is that at this time of year many clients say to me ‘I’ve no idea how I’m going to resist all those Christmas treats, what should I do?’ My answer is always the same – cut yourself some slack! In order to get good results with most things in life, you need to be compliant 80% of the time (OK, 90% if you want to accelerate things) but that means that you can take it easy for at least 10% of the time and still get good results – and never does this apply more than at Christmas!

The key is to making sure you’re the one who’s in control of your cravings – so I advise clients to just make an agreement with themselves in advance: for example to allow themselves to take it easy for a specific, pre-set period of time over the Christmas holiday where they will not overly restrict. In other words, they give themselves permission to relax in advance – with the one rule being that whatever happens you don’t feel guilty, but just know it’s only for a limited period of time, and that you’ll be getting right back on things after Christmas!

(And yes, it can actually even have some benefits in terms of resetting vital ‘satiety’ hormones and relieving psychological pressure – which is very real!)

In some ways, this even broadens out the question of what really is health from a big picture point of view? Who is ‘healthier’ – the person who denies themselves a mince-pie on a Christmas lunch with their daughter in order to save a few precious calories, or the person who whole-heartedly savours the moment, enjoys the company and to hell with the calories – at least for now!?

Where do you stand on this – do you embrace special moments without restriction - or do you feel the need to ‘stay strong’ in case you fall off the wagon and never get back on again?
