Saturday 9th of May was a day for fun and laughter for our residents!

We started off our day with a morning visit from Claire and Leila who played ping pong games with our residents as well as a sing-along getting everyone involved in exercise that never feels like exercise! And then in the afternoon, by popular resident request our residents cooled down from the morning activity with Moby Dick (the film version)!!

VE Day:

Friday was VE day at Oaklands and we couldn't have asked for a better day! With fantastic sandwiches, scrumptious scones and great company it was a fantastic day celebrating such an important event in European and world history especially when paired with an amazing visit from the Lord Mayor of Chester herself!

We started the afternoon off with some afternoon tea and a visit from the Lord Mayor which we hoped you all enjoyed and then ended our afternoon with Andy singing for us, starting with some classic feelgood party songs like Sweet Caroline before singing more VE associated songs like Vera Lynn's "We'll meet again"!!

We did have to make a bit of a mad dash at the was as it attempted to rain on our parade, but thankfully we all got it in dry and the sun decided to come back out for an encore just in time too for an extra amazing end of the day! And that extra amazing end was The Lions presenting our activities department with a cheque of a £1000, with the money going towards all sorts of amazing future activities for our residents that we won't spoil here!

We hope everyone who attended had an amazing time with us on VE day and thank you for coming!

1st May 2026 is May Day and we celebrated that today at Oakland's by learning all about may day traditions, including the history of Morris Dancers; the May Pole; the May Queen and Jack in the Green!!

We also learnt about the Celtic roots to the tradition stemming from the Beltane summer festival and how over the centuries the festival has come in and out of popularity including being banned in the rule of Oliver Cromwell and being brought back under Charles 2nd!! After that we took a cup of tea beak and had some cake (brought in by a staff member for their birthday tomorrow) before going outside to do our very own Maypole before we were thwarted by the rain!

All in all it was a brilliant afternoon and we hope everyone enjoyed themselves!

History Afternoons are much beloved here at Oaklands and our Women in the Great War talk on the afternoon of 28th April was no exception!!

With amazingly insightful factoids about the kinds of jobs women had in the war-effort and what daily life looked like it was an amazingly informative afternoon and provided a deeper look into a world out residents may have experienced first hand through their families and friends but now have a deeper understanding of this part of our history!

Tuesday 21st of April saw an afternoon of parachuting fun in the sun lounge!!

Though it's a simple game it's perfect for maintaining and rebuilding hand to eye coordination, community involvement and socialising with other members of the Oakland's community that our residents may not have had chance to be before!! It also doesn't help that it gets everyone into raucous laughter each and every time!!

Wednesday 15th of April has been a double booked day today, with our residents getting a lovely visit from Brenda and Ned the therapy dog (pictured above giving lots of loves and kisses) and a celebration and little history tour of World Art Day (the sequinned mosaics featured above being the results of our artistic pursuits)!

Learning all about the 17,000 year old paintings in French Caves to some of the Renaissance's biggest names we had an absolute blast learning all about some of the worlds most iconic works of art! And about the fact that World Art Day is on the 15th because it's Leonardo DiVincis birthday!

Today Thursday 9th April saw some of our residents going to the Blue Planet Aquarium! Though we got rained on on the way in it was an absolutely amazing day!

With sharks, an octopus and all sorts of different fish and even a tortoise or two it was absolutely amazing to see what amounts to a fraction of what our oceans have on offer! All of our residents who visited today had an absolute blast and we're so so happy to have gone!

Wednesday 8th April was Animal day and here at Oaklands we spent the afternoon in the sunshine with ice cream learning all about the wonderful animals in the world around us.

With interesting factoids like the fact that axelotels can regrow limbs and even their brain and that ants do morning stretches there was something for everyone to learn no matter their favourite animal and no matter how much if a fact buff they are!

This Easter Monday we had our very own Easter service from Gill and Lesley, focusing on the Easter story and new life.

Here at Oaklands we enjoy and participate in church service to allow a continuation of routine and connection to community our residents may have experienced in their lives before they came to us. Whether they join us for religious or social reasons we are happy to have church service with anybody and everyone who joins us when we hosts it in the sun lounge.
