This afternoon we got an extra special visit from Cheshire Mobile farm, being visited by Shaun, Freddy the sheep; Flopsy the french lop ear rabbit and George the naked guinea pig!!

First being greeted by Shaun and Freddy (who attempted to take matters into their own hooves at one point and move a residents walker to get more cuddles) all of our residents had a fantastic time getting to learn about their new fluffy friends especially the fact that the specific sheep breed can't be sheared for clothing wool but instead the kind used for carpets! After loving and cuddling the sheep, we were then introduced to Flopsy and George!

Amongst all this we had a visit from Kids Planet who came to wish us a merry Christmas and sang us some Christmas carols including Jingle Bells!

Flopsy at over 7 kilos arrived to us in her pram alongside George who drew initially confused reactions before quickly becoming a favourite once people gave him a stroke and discovered how soft and squidgy he truly was! Flopsy as well enjoyed plenty of scratches and pats from our residents and seemed to content to get some good affection and snuggles in her tray in before going home!!

We already have them booked in again for next year and we can't wait!!

This Wednesday we had a wonderful visit from our dear friends Brenda and Ned this morning!

We're no stranger to Brenda and Ned, and each visit from them is something to look forward to, and the anticipation alone of seeing our furry friend gets a massive smile on all our faces, not to mention when he's here in Oakland's with us and delivering big smiles and lovely kisses.

Therapy dogs and all of their applications are incredibly useful in homes such as ours, and we're so thankful to be able to have time with Ned and Brenda in general but especially because of this!

This morning was also just the start to our little animals funday today at Oakland's, as this afternoon we're also getting a visit from Cheshire Mobile farm!

Though we also went in the morning, this afternoon's Christmas tree trip was our last one of the year and we made an absolute wonderful time of it!

With a circuit around the displays, looking for all twelve of the Christmas sheep hidden amongst the trees (our activities assistants favourite was Francis), a walk around the main body of the cathedral and finally ending up in the cafe for a cup of tea and cake it was wonderful and a brilliant way to explore one of Chester's most wonderful landmarks!

We can't wait to do it again and hope everyone had a wonderful time together!

Trips and activities like this are vital to keeping our residents connected with local community and culture and we're always happy to help facilitate it!

Saturday 13th was our Christmas Light trail this year, and it was an absolutely amazing time!

Complete with beautiful lights, mince pies, and a visit and present from Mrs.Claus it was an absolutely marvelous afternoon and evening. Starting in the sun lounge our residents made their way through a wonderland of lights up to Mrs.Claus' grotto in the TV room where they enjoyed a chat with and received a handful of presents from the big man in reds wife!

It was a beautiful evening and we can only hope our residents and their relatives had as fun a time as we did and that you all come again next year!!

Wednesday 10th was a jam packed day for us at Oaklands, with lunch spent at Abbey Gate Collage where our residents got to enjoy singing, poetry, a festive lunch and even got a visit from Father Christmas himself.

Though we got lost on the way there (who decided to name two schools so similarly!?) we really enjoyed our time there and hope to see them again!

These kinds of trips are important to us and for our residents as it keeps our residents engaged with local culture and community and ensured that intergenerational community stays intact and helps develop and strengthen bonds between the youngest and oldest generations.

Whilst Wednesday morning was filled with songs and poetry, this afternoon was filled with Christmas cheer and artistic flare.

Utilising our recently made community postbox we made Christmas cards this afternoon and popped them in the box ready to be delivered! Each one has a individual message from the resident and decorated by their hands to make it something extra special and unique this year!

This kind of activity is good for all our residents who might have a artist inside or even people who might have realised they haven't bought their Christmas cards just yet and want to make something themselves this time!

Wednesday 10th was a double whammy for us today!

In the morning some of our residents got the chance to go to Abbey Gate, and listen to beautiful singing and poetry readings, get some tasty snacks, eat some yummy food and even got visited by Father Christmas!

We're so happy to be invited by Abbey Gate today and hope they know how much of a wonderful time they gave us!

These kinds of trips are important for community engagement, keeping our residents involved with cultural activities and ensuring the connection between older and younger generations isn't lost.

Monday saw us kicking off another Christmas tradition here at Oaklands with us starting our reading of Charles Dickens A Christmas Carol!

Starting the afternoon off right by snuggling up with a cup of tea as the rain poured down outside we made our way through 30 of 150 pages, stopping every now and then to discuss what we thought and then having to restart the page when we lost track it where we had been up to! We also decided that we would finish the story by the 25th and at our pace that should pose no issue!

This kind of activity is important for our residents as it allows for a relaxed but still mentally stimulating activity as well as allowing for nostalgia for our residents as they remember reading the story growing up at this time of year or even of reading it to their own children. Reading to our residents is also important in its own right as it allows for our residents who cannot read as easily as they used to to still engage with beloved stories and even new ones!

Tuesday 9th December was our annual Christmas Appreciation Day here at Oaklands and saw us having an absolute blast, making festive cupcakes, singing songs and even hosting a gingerbread house competition!

This appreciation day was all about lovely volunteers who come in to see us throughout the year including Gill and Lesley and Tulip! We just want to show everyone who comes in and visits and helps out a massive thank you and hope that you understand how much we really appreciate all you do and Oakland's wouldn't be the same without all of you!

And when it comes to who won the gingerbread house competition... Well. It was all too yummy to really come to a decision!

Monday brought us a classic Christmas reading day, in the form of A Christmas Carol!

Starting a Christmas reading tradition right we started the afternoon getting cozy with a cup of tea and settled in with some natural ambiance of down right torrential rain to get started on Charles Dickens Christmas story.

Stoping every so often to discuss lead us to have to restart a few pages a few times but that just added to the charm of the afternoon!

Activities such as this serve as relaxing but mentally engaging activities for our residents and offer the pleasure of reading and listening to stories again if perhaps they're not able to do so as easily anymore. Adding to that they serve as wonderful moments of nostalgia, reminding our residents of perhaps reading this story as children or even if reading it to their own children.

We'll be picking the story back up a few more times between now and Christmas, and with us making it 30 pages into 150 pages it should be more than doable before the 25th!!
