Love was in the air yesterday, with a wonderful moment taking place in our sun lounge at dinner time!

Yesterday saw one of our residents celebrating sixty years together with his wife, sharing a meal together with music and wine, as they reminisced memories of days gone by and look forward to making many more together.

Today was Brenda and Neds day to visit us, on top of our Oaklands Space day in honour of World Space Week!!

Brenda and Therapy Dog Ned joined us at Oaklands this 8th October for snuggles and cuddles aplenty alongside a healthy dose of kisses! At five Neds been doing this kind of work for around 3 years now and he is clearly an ace at his job if the smiles and laughter he drew from our residents is any indication. Truly a pro in the field of smile bringing! Animal therapy as a recognised concept has existed since 1976 but has been in use since at least 1792 and it's not hard to see why when animals like Ned can light up a room just by being in it.

Today was also Oaklands Space Day! Every year from the 4-10th of October the United Nations hosts World Space Week, and this year's theme was all about life in space. So, today we learnt about all the animals that have gone to space including Laika the dog who is one of the most famous cosmonauts going up on the Sputnik 2 and Miss Able and Miss Baker two American Rhesus monkeys who were the first animals to survive space flight!

Along side our animal companions that have braved the final frontier (and wondering how much more training a therapy dog might need to become an astronaut) we also learnt about the International Space Station; the first woman in space Valentina Tereshkova; how cold space really gets (-275C/-454F!!); how many planets we have in our solar system; why Pluto doesn't count as a planet anymore and how long exactly a year lasts on Neptune in Earth Years - 164.5 to be exact!!

With many questions asked and most of them answered (though we're still on the fence about what a navy trained rhesus monkey entails) we found ourselves having an absolute blast!! Space is always expanding and we can't wait to see what we can learn next year.

Joining us once more for a song-filled afternoon was Andy this tuesday!

Singing for (and with) us, as well as becoming the impromptu dance partner for many a resident this Tuesday 7th October, Andy brought everyone's spirits to a raucous applause and got everyone ready to jump into a boogie this afternoon and we couldn't have been happier to join in.

Singing is about community here at Oaklands and every Tuesday that Andy sings with us highlights that more and more each time From singing along to Andy's selection to singing our own songs like Daisy Daisy it's without a doubt always good fun and leaves us in desperate need of cups of tea to soothe our song worn throats!

Gill and Lesley joined us once again for Church service this 6th of October, for a special service on the Harvest Festival - which even included bread designed like a bundle of wheat with a mouse. (Pictured above)

With prayers and discussion aimed at our luck to have food all year round, as well as the troubles those who grow and currently are going without food face, it was a thoughtful and poignant service. As well as themes of the harvest, everybody had fun as we talked about our favourite autumn traditions, the temperament of autumn weather and jam and bread making!

Closing out with a prayer and a fun sing-a-long to "He's got the Whole World in his Hands", this service brought us great joy and gratitude for what we have and the work put into it.

Faith, and what it means to each individual person, is important to use at Oakland's and is one of the main reasons why we love having Gill and Lesley with us as they provide not only doctrine but genuine engagement with our residents and their lives.

As always Lynne joined us for another session of seated ballet and once more drew in our residents for good fun and exercise! The beauty of dance is that it always brings our residents together and is a hit with both male and female residents alike!

Pointing their toes, fingers and using their scarves we had a room full of prima ballerinas, and filled the sun lounge with joy and laughter. Dance is one of our favourite exercises to do with the residents, with it always drawing a crowd.

Now that it is autumn we thought we would make use of the fallen leaves and use them as part of our arts and crafts afternoon making cards.

Our residents have had lots of fun painting, using the glitter which got everywhere! But most importantly it was a time to reflect on Autumn and what it means to us.

Dance class, what fun we had. We jived, rocked and rolled, we had jazz hands and everything in between. Everyone had so much fun if they didn't dance they sang along.
Dance is a great way to have fun and keep fit all at the same time.
Dance class is always a good afternoon and always brings in a good crowd.

Our monthly sing-a-long with Andy.

Full of fun, laughter and karaoke performances capable of knocking the socks off of anyone close enough to hear them, this sing-a-long was another one to remember. With hits like Jolene and Sweet Caroline the sun lounge was abuzz with fun times and many a happy arm wave as per the tradition when hearing such songs.

Visits from Andy, and singing entertainers as a whole, are incredibly important for our residents and their recreation time with us. Singing and watching someone sing acts as a conduit for low stakes engagement with peers, be that singing along, waving hands together or on occasion booing off a song they don't like, it allows for all of our residents if they want to come down to have fun together and individually and provides them with a good laugh to keep spirits high.

Hooton Park Hangers was the destination for some of our intrepid adventuring residents on Wednesday!

A museum on the site of an old RAF airfield and dedicated to WW1 and WW2 aircraft alongside civilian crafts, Hooton was an absolute goldmine of local and (in some residents cases) personal history.

As we escaped the rain and toured aircrafts, our residents got to see an iconic Spitfire recreation, antique civilian planes that some residents remembered flying in and some loaned pieces including restored versions of some of the first military helicopters the RAF used!

Trips like Hooton Park Hangers allow our residents to learn some of the 'hidden' history of the area they grew up in/near and allow for reminiscence of past years with all the "blasts from the past" as they explore the iconic Hanger One of Hooton Hangers!

Saturday morning bright and early, team Oaklands did our Memory Walk around the Chester Roman Walls. We have raised £170 for Alzheimer's Society, it was a great effort with the team- lots of laughter and fun was had amongst the lovely autumnal scenery along the way.
