Friday 13th of March was the furthest thing from a day for bad luck at Oakland's! Instead it was an afternoon of animal fun!!

Being visited by some pygmy goats, rabbits, chicks and some sheep (one of which was called Spaghetti, on account of his curls we can only assume) there was an absolute menagire on display for us to greet and stroke on Friday!

All the animals from Cheshire Mobile Farm are friendly and each time they come to visit us our days get that little bit better and it's undoubtedly due to the absolute cuties who visit us!!

Since the 1700s animals have been proven to help people with a meriad of issues whether it be loneliness or mental illness and human brains are almost hardwired to adore cute things, so we love bringing in the Cheshire Mobile Farm to give our residents a pick me up, and helping to improve their mood for days afterwards as they remember the visit!

Sunday 15th March was mother's day this year and it was an absolutely beautiful day!

We started with an early lunch going into an amazing afternoon tea where our residents and their relatives came together for scones, sandwiches (jam and egg salad seemed to be the favourites), cakes and sausage rolls all made by our amazing kitchen staff!!

After eating to their hearts content our residents then came down to the sun lounge to be serenaded by Andy who came to sing for us, pulling out some amazing classic songs -- some specifically for mother's day and others to get a good old sing along going!

From the first sandwich to the last song by Andy it was an amazing afternoon and we loved every second of it and hoped you did too!!

Saturday 7th March, what a treat we had. The Chester handbag choir came to visit us and they did not disappoint. We had a medley of the Beatles, Freddie Mercury David Bowie and more.

We have tapped our feet sang along and clapped, we have had such a wonderful morning with wonderful people who give up their time to make a difference to people who need it the most.

It is people like the Chester handbag choir that make our community so amazing, people coming in to spend time with our residents making them smile and have fun, these moments are special and what makes life here at Oaklands more amazing.

Thursday 5th March was sunny and warm Spring felt like it was well and truly on its way so off out in the garden we went to play games, we were having lots of fun until we were all tired from all the lifting of the parachute. We sat starting to play eye spy and then had to run inside due to the good old British weather, yes it started to rain.
It was all good though we went inside and enjoyed ice cream and carried on our games.

Wednesday 4th was an arts afternoon here at Oaklands, focused all on spring crafts!

Spring has certainly sprung in the sun lounge, with the sun out we thought we would colour our own daffodils and leeks keeping St David's day in mind, we didn't want the traditional daffodil so we went and created our own and we think they are very pretty indeed.

With spring well and truly here we look forward to seeing our tulips daffodils and many more amazing and wonderful flowers in our garden, so now we welcome in the joys and colours of spring!

Tuesday 3rd saw another wonderful visit from one of our favourite singers, Andy!

Coming in with the classics and the toe-tappers as always we had an absolute blast and good old sing-along in the time that we spent with him!

Activities like this are brilliant and so so important for our residents, providing them with a social activity that allows for varying levels of engagement and an opportunity to engage with their fellow residents that they may not have had previously!

Monday 2nd March was the day of our monthly church service with Gill and Lesley !

It was a beautiful start to the month, and a time for our residents to come together and celebrate both faith and community. As with all our non secular activities it is entirely optional for our residents but we enjoy the opportunity to have them join us regardless of their faith!

We spoke about St David's day and daffodils and sang hymns, the service is always a special day for the residents not for the fact they enjoy the service but they enjoy the company of Gill and Lesley which always brings a smile to the residents faces. It is important when we have people like Gill and Lesley who come in to visit our residents because it is special moments shared between faith and friendship.

Sunday 1st saw our residents talk about famous women throughout the years, some women we knew some we did not, here at Oaklands we love to learn and history is one of our favourite subjects. As one of our ladies likes to say here at Oaklands it is the "University of life", it really is we can learn so much about life by listening to one anothers stories and learning and growing is part of life and we should never stop.

We learnt about so many amazing women and was amazed with their courage and fight, some of the ladies we learnt about were Malala Yousafzai, Marie Curie,Rosa Parks, Florence Nightingale and many more. This was an engaging afternoon where we started to understand how amazing women truly are and all the wonderful things they have done for us and still do for us.

Friday 27th saw the leads take over the sun lounge for the afternoon, they played parachute games with the residents, with lots of fun laughter and plenty of smiles to go around residents had just as much fun as the leads.

These games are always fun and not realising how much exercising we are doing because it's hard work all that lifting and tipping the parachute we like to try and engage with exercise and body movement as much as we can so even these games can get the body moving especially when it gets competitive. Everyone had a wonderful afternoon and then relaxed with a hot drink and relaxing music and possibly a song or two from our lovely lead which is always welcomed by the residents.

Exercise like this is so so important for our residents, allowing them to remain mobile in ways that they are comfortable and to safely try other new things if they'd like to with and whilst having fun with their peers!

Thursday 26th saw us being visited by Emma for another afternoon of Dance! Starting with some classical music like 'Dance of the Knights' from the Romeo and Juliet ballet, and the Sugarplum Fairy from the Nutcracker, all the way to some more modern songs like 'Any Dream Will Do' from Joseph and the Technicolour dream coat and 'Friend Like Me' from Alladin!

Waving our scarves and pompoms we had an absolute blast, and by the end of it we had all completely forgotten that we were supposed to be exercising in the first place; which is always a fun change.

Exercise like this is so so important for our residents, allowing them to remain mobile in ways that they are comfortable and to safely try other new things if they'd like to with and whilst having fun with their peers!

Tuesday 24th of February saw us being visited by Rafael for a silent movie afternoon!

Whilst the muted movie plays Rafael plays the musical score live and in the room for our residents to give them a truly unique experience!

This unique twist to a movie afternoon provides not only a new experience to look back on but also a communal experience to talk about later on with others, a mini concert from the comfort of their own living room! It's a mentally stimulating activity whilst allowing our residents to just relax and enjoy themselves!

Today on 20th February at Oakland's we were visited by Lynn who came to do some seated ballet with our residents.

With bright scarves and pompoms we cycled through Alladins 'Friend like me', classical music like 'Dance of the knights' and the Nutcrackers 'Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy' and others as we got our boogie on! Such activities are a favourite because of the fun they offer but also because of how they both physically and mentally stimulate our residents and provide them with an exercise outlet that doesn't make them feel like they're exercising and so lowers the presumed stress that comes with intentionally exercising for a specified amount of time.

It also had the added benefit of getting a good laugh out of everyone involved as they do their best to copy the scarf tricks!

We had an absolute blast and can't wait for our next dance class.
