We are a happy home founded on solid relationships and good teamwork.

The "Conifers family" of Directors makes regular visits, and one of the Directors also spends a large part of her week working alongside management at the Oaklands.

Today at Oakland's we had a bit of a double whammy!

Starting out with a visit from Brenda and Ned, everyone got some cuddles and kisses, the latter Ned the dog was happy to dole out with glee, going in for kisses after a ear scratch and little else! Ned is coming up to almost half a decade of being a therapy dog and his skill at making people smile reflect that experience!

After Brenda and Ned left us for the day we continued with our Big Bird Watch from earlier in the week, and finalised our numbers ready to send off to the RSPB though admittedly we did the count a little after the official dates! Once that had been done we decorated and positioned our origami from earlier in the week into a beautiful 3D display! (No pictures today, since it had to dry before we could put it up)

Wednesday 28th of January was the start of our Big Bird Watch at Oakland's, and so we got to watching our garden whilst learning all about the different birds we needed to keep an eye out for and even talked about bird watches we've participated in in the past and birds we've watched over the years just in our every day lives!

During our watch today we saw 4 Crows, 5 Robins and 1 Blue tit! We fully intend to keep our eyes peeled for more birds as the week goes on though so by the end we'll have our numbers ready to report!!

Low stakes, collaborative and cognitively engaging activities like this are so important to our residents as it provides them with a fun activity that also helps them engage with their fellow residents and remember times gone by.

Today at Oaklands we were visited by Emma for dance lessons! With songs like Jailhouse Rock by Elvis and Man After Midnight by ABBA we had a fantastic time! A healthy body and mind are facilitated by activities such as our dance lessons, and it doesn't hurt that we have so much fun we forget we're even exercising!

At Oaklands we have been exchanging letters with the French secondary school Jules Romains in Saint Galmien and today we read through each letter sent to us and wrote back to them!

All of our children pen pals are incredible at English and some of them were even using contractions in their English, especially cool for children writing in a secondary language at only 11 or 12!!

These letters were so so sweet and offered a look into life on the content for the younger generation, we had so much fun learning about the kids and figuring out what we wanted to tell them.

Today 15th January we were visited by a very special guest at Oaklands! Our very own centurion all the way from Roman Chester!

Our guide Tiberius took us through what the day in the life of a roman soldier would have been, what they'd have had on hand in their pack and all about what exactly the Romans thought of our stormy little island!

With jokes, questions and good fun all around we were remiss to send him off with anything but earnest please to come again!

Today January 8th after coming out of a week of snow we decided that we were going to try our hand at some up-cycling and make some suncatchers out of CDs, string and paint pens!

Though the sky has been grey today and the weather forecast warned of snow this afternoon it didn't stop us from making our own sunshine in the sun lounge!

Tuesday 30th of December, we had a history afternoon all about the Royal Mint.

Looking at example coins and medals, we learnt all about what the Royal Mint is and what exactly it does! This included learning about how the Royal Mint doesn't just make coins and medals for the UK but for all over the world as well!

Some of our example coins included discontinued coins like a Half-Crowne and we also had a bar of gold which was 200g and we googled how much that would cost and it was a whopping £11,000 (unfortunately it was fake, so we couldn't make a tidy profit...)

Monday 22nd December was one of our residents confirmations!! With friends and family as well as the Bishop, it was an absolutely beautiful ceremony and brought all of us together as our residents took the next step in her faith journey!

This Christmas eve was absolutely magic here at Oaklands for or Residents and Relatives Christmas party! Opening up with a visit and outstanding performance from Andy, and the all want along to classic hits like White Christmas, primary school classics like Jingle bells and even some contemporary hits like Coldplay "Christmas Light"! We also made sure that everyone lost the unofficial "get to Christmas without listening to Wham" game by making a sing along out of it!

From there we were visited by the Christmas dinosaur (a returning visitor here at Oaklands) and then went down to our newly refurbished dining room where we announced our raffle winners and ate our dinner along side some lovely mince pies and mulled wine!

We wish you all a merry Christmas and hope everyone who came today had a brilliant time, because we did!

Sunday 21st December was our Cheese and Biscuits afternoon and we had a cheese-tastic time!

With all sorts of cheese including Truffle Trove and Green Thunder cheddar, crackers and an assortment of fruit we had so much fun and wasted no time digging in to our prizes. Afternoon activities like this are important for maintaining a social and intellectually stimulating environment for our residents whilst allowing them to partake in activities they may have done with friends in their younger years.

This afternoon we got an extra special visit from Cheshire Mobile farm, being visited by Shaun, Freddy the sheep; Flopsy the french lop ear rabbit and George the naked guinea pig!!

First being greeted by Shaun and Freddy (who attempted to take matters into their own hooves at one point and move a residents walker to get more cuddles) all of our residents had a fantastic time getting to learn about their new fluffy friends especially the fact that the specific sheep breed can't be sheared for clothing wool but instead the kind used for carpets! After loving and cuddling the sheep, we were then introduced to Flopsy and George!

Amongst all this we had a visit from Kids Planet who came to wish us a merry Christmas and sang us some Christmas carols including Jingle Bells!

Flopsy at over 7 kilos arrived to us in her pram alongside George who drew initially confused reactions before quickly becoming a favourite once people gave him a stroke and discovered how soft and squidgy he truly was! Flopsy as well enjoyed plenty of scratches and pats from our residents and seemed to content to get some good affection and snuggles in her tray in before going home!!

We already have them booked in again for next year and we can't wait!!

This Wednesday we had a wonderful visit from our dear friends Brenda and Ned this morning!

We're no stranger to Brenda and Ned, and each visit from them is something to look forward to, and the anticipation alone of seeing our furry friend gets a massive smile on all our faces, not to mention when he's here in Oakland's with us and delivering big smiles and lovely kisses.

Therapy dogs and all of their applications are incredibly useful in homes such as ours, and we're so thankful to be able to have time with Ned and Brenda in general but especially because of this!

This morning was also just the start to our little animals funday today at Oakland's, as this afternoon we're also getting a visit from Cheshire Mobile farm!
