EXACTLY what to expect at your appointment…
🤍 WE LISTEN
First and most importantly of all, we listen to you to understand your concerns and how your feeding journey has been so far.
🤍 WE ASSESS
We'll also make an assessment of baby's tongue movement and function.
🤍 WE EXPLAIN
If tongue-tie division is appropriate, we'll go through the potential outcomes & risks of the procedure with you, so you can make an informed decision on whether to go ahead or not.
There's no obligation to go ahead, and we're quite happy for parents to go away and spend time researching & thinking more about the procedure if they wish to.
If you do decide to go ahead with the procedure, you'll be asked to sign a consent form (if you haven’t already).
🤍 WE TREAT
Your baby will then be swaddled in a towel or blanket and placed on a comfortable mat on the treatment bench in the clinic room.
Then one of us will steady your baby’s head (unless you prefer to). And don’t be surprised to see one of us wearing a head torch so we can clearly see inside baby’s mouth.
Using an index finger to lift the tongue, the frenulum (tongue-tie) will be visualised then snipped using a pair of single-use, sterile, curved, blunt-tipped scissors.
Once the frenulum has been fully divided to form a diamond-shaped wound, a piece of gauze will be placed under baby’s tongue and baby then passed to mum to feed.
🤍 WE SUPPORT
Babies usually latch on within a minute & bleeding is usually very light and stops quickly once baby is feeding. Baby’s feeding will be observed, and support provided with this.
We'll explain to you what to expect in terms of healing & recovery. And both aftercare and a feeding plan will be agreed with you to manage any ongoing feeding issues and get feeding back on track.
We hope that knowing what to expect reassures you, but if you have further questions, drop us a line ❤️
