🐎 The Equine Hoof: The Foundation of Performance
A biomechanical masterpiece, designed to absorb shock, distribute weight and provide propulsion. Good hoof health is essential for movement efficiency, joint stability and injury prevention.

Key structures:
🐴 Hoof wall: protects internal structures and supports weight
🐴 Frog: a natural shock absorber that also aids circulation
🐴 Digital cushion: provides cushioning and impact absorption
🐴 Navicular apparatus: plays a huge role in biomechanics and movement

Imbalances, improper shoeing, or poor hoof health can lead to lameness, discomfort and reduced performance! Regular farrier care and Physiotherapy can help to maintain optimal function.

As a physio I will make note of hoof-pastern angles and digital cushion health as part of my assessment due to the impact these can have on other structures!

Veterinary Physiotherapy & Kissing Spine🐎

Kissing spine (overriding dorsal spinous processes) is a painful condition where the vertebrae in a horse’s back become too close, leading to inflammation, muscle tension, and poor performance. Veterinary physiotherapy is a key component of rehabilitation, offering:

πŸ‹οΈ Core Strengthening – Targeted exercises improve spinal stability and reduce strain on affected areas.
🩹 Pain & Inflammation Management – Modalities like laser therapy, ultrasound, and manual therapy help alleviate discomfort.
πŸ”„ Postural & Biomechanical Correction – Groundwork and ridden exercises promote proper movement patterns.
πŸ’† Soft Tissue Mobilization – Massage and stretching release muscle tension, improving flexibility and comfort.

Research supports physiotherapy as an effective complement to medical and surgical treatments, helping horses return to function with reduced pain and improved mobility. Consult a veterinary physiotherapist (me) for a tailored rehab plan!

Veterinary Physiotherapy & Equine Arthritis🐎

Equine arthritis is a degenerative joint disease that leads to pain, inflammation, and reduced mobility. Veterinary physiotherapy plays a crucial role in managing this condition by:

🦴 Enhancing Joint Mobility – Controlled range-of-motion exercises prevent stiffness and improve flexibility.
πŸ’ͺ Strengthening Supporting Muscles – Targeted rehabilitation helps stabilize affected joints.
🩹 Reducing Pain & Inflammation – Modalities like laser therapy, ultrasound, and manual therapy decrease discomfort and promote healing.
🩸 Optimizing Circulation & Healing – Techniques like massage and hydrotherapy increase blood flow, aiding in tissue repair.

Scientific studies support physiotherapy as an effective adjunct to traditional treatments, improving long-term outcomes for arthritic horses.

Get in touch to work with a veterinary physiotherapist to create a tailored plan for your horse’s needs!
