👣chilblains and cold feet👣

The weather has been so bitterly cold lately that I have seen a huge increase in the number of chilblains coming into the clinic. Here’s some advice to help prevent them occurring or getting any worse.
-
-
Tips to keep your feet warm and prevent chilblains in this cold weather!
-

1. If you have to venture out make sure that you already have warm feet before you leave the house. It is far easier to keep feet warm than warm them up.
-

2. Wear Merino wool, cashmere or bamboo socks, they keep feet warm. Two pairs are better than one, but only if you have room in your footwear, you don’t want to constrict your toes. Toes need to be able to move in footwear. Avoid cotton socks as they will hold moisture and keep it next to your skin. You could use an insulating insole - I have these in the clinic.
-

3. Avoid extremes of temperatures. When the temperature drops your circulation will automatically start to shut down the circulation closest to the skin in the parts of your body furthest from your heart, mainly your hands and feet. It does this to protect your vital organs keeping your core and head warm, this is why the most distal parts of the body mainly your feet, hands and tips of your ears and nose are at risk of developing chilblains.
-

4. If your feet have got cold it’s really important to Warm them back up gradually. Don’t be tempted to put your feet on the radiator or next to the fire. Don’t immediately go for a hot shower or bath. When the toes are warmed too quickly the small vessels carrying blood to your toes dilate far too quickly, leaking fluid and bled into the tissues, this causes the itching and swelling. Try massaging when with a warming cream and keep them warm with socks and sheepskin slippers.
-
5. Keep your feet dry. If your shoes or boots leak, it’s time for a new pair.

Well that's it for 2020. We made it!
Deva Podiatry closed its doors and turned out the lights tonight at 8pm for a well earned Christmas break. We will be back and rearing to go on 11th of January.

This has been the single most challenging, stressful and worrying year not only from a business point of view but in many other ways too.
So for the next couple of weeks it's all about chilling, recovering and recharging.

To every single one of you who has supported and trusted us to keep you safe this year, and there are many of you, thank you. Thank you. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. We’ve all had to adapt in ways that we never could have imagined.

We wish you a very happy Christmas in whatever shape it forms this year. And let’s hope for a happy and healthy 2021!

COVID-19 update

Good news! we are remaining OPEN as usual throughout the upcoming national lockdown.

As the country prepares for another national lockdown between 5th November and 2nd December, we want to reassure you that as a medical practice we are continuing to follow strict guidelines from both the government and our governing body. We are regulated by the Health and Care Professional Council (HCPC) and provide a safe environment for treatments.

The work podiatrists do relieves the strain on the NHS whilst maintaining the nation’s foot health and preventing more serious foot-related problems.

By attending a private Podiatry Clinic, you are able to have your foot problem treated safely, quickly and effectively.
