My Why 💛

This is a special memory of me with my Nain and Taid 🤍 When my Nain became unwell with MND, a speech therapist became part of her care and seeing the difference they made stayed with me. It made me realise just how important communication is for independence, connection, and identity.

I also grew up inspired by my Mum, a Speech and Language Therapy Assistant, who has supported me every step of my journey.

After graduating in 2017, I built my career across the NHS and private sector, before launching Cariad Speech Therapy in April 2024, the best decision I’ve ever made.

Speech therapy isn’t just a job to me, it’s about helping people find their voice and supporting them to live more independently.

That’s my why 💛

Communication Corner 💬 | Episode 6

Why repetition really matters (even when it feels like you’re saying the same thing all day!)

If you’ve ever felt like you’re repeating yourself over and over again, you’re not doing it wrong. You’re actually doing something really important.

Children learn language through hearing words again and again in meaningful moments. What might feel repetitive to us is exactly what helps things “stick” for them.

So if your child says “car,” and you respond with “yes, car!” or “big car,” and then say it again later when another car goes past, that repetition is building understanding.

Keep it natural, keep it simple, and don’t worry about sounding repetitive, you’re giving your child exactly what they need 💛

✨ What Your Toddler’s Communication is Really Telling You ✨

It’s easy to think communication is just about words but for toddlers, it’s so much more. They’re constantly sending messages through gestures, looks, and sounds, even before they can speak clearly.

When your toddler points at a toy, snack, or something interesting… they’re showing you what matters to them. It’s their way of sharing attention and starting a little conversation.

When your toddler reaches out for something or toward you… they’re communicating their needs or desires. That simple stretch of an arm says, “I want that” or “Can you help me?”

When your toddler looks at you while pointing or making a sound… they’re checking if you understand them. That glance is their way of connecting and inviting interaction- a tiny conversation in itself.

When your toddler waves, claps, or shakes their head… they’re expressing ideas and feelings without words. Responding to these gestures helps them learn language naturally.

When your toddler babbles, giggles, or makes other vocal sounds… they’re experimenting with communication. Every noise is an attempt to get your attention and express themselves and responding encourages more attempts.

Every gesture, look, or sound is a step toward language. Paying attention helps you respond in ways that support your child’s speech, language, and confidence.

✨ If you’d like personalised guidance for your child, my new Early Support Package gives practical strategies and support tailored to your toddler’s communication skills.

What’s the funniest thing your child has ever said? 💬

I’ve been working with a family for a few months now.

When we first started, their child had very few words and found joint attention really tricky.

Recently, their language has really started to come through. And then this happened…

They pointed at their mum’s arms and said:
“Bingo wings”.

She didn’t know whether to laugh or be slightly offended. But moments like this are actually a big deal. This is language developing- using words to label, describe, and make sense of the world around them.

What’s the funniest thing your child has said?

There are lots of things that are important in a Speech Therapist session… 💬🧠

But there are also things that look important that actually aren’t as important as you might think 👀

Speech Therapy isn’t about perfect sitting, perfect eye contact, or getting everything “right” 🙌🏻

It’s about connection, communication, and meeting the child where they are 🤍

Every child communicates differently and that’s what we build from 💬

Build and expand your child’s language

One powerful way to support communication is to build on what your child says.

When your child uses a word or short phrase, you can expand it by adding one or two words.

This gives children a clear model of the next step in their language development without any pressure to repeat it.

Keep it simple and follow your child’s lead.

Over time, these small expansions help build longer phrases and sentences 💛

The part of being a Speech Therapist no one sees… 💬

1️⃣ Thinking about my sessions long after the day ends. Replaying moments, tweaking ideas, wondering what I’ll try next time 🧠💭

2️⃣ The constant learning and reflecting. Every child is different, so every approach has to flex and adapt 📚✨

3️⃣ The guilt when I take a day off. Even when I know rest matters, it’s hard to fully switch off 😅📅

4️⃣ The joy when a parent says they’ve noticed a difference at home. Honestly the best part of the job 🥹💛

5️⃣ The worry when a child isn’t progressing as expected and the ongoing problem-solving that comes with it 😔

6️⃣ The session planning that sometimes takes longer than the session itself. So much thought behind every “simple” activity 🗂️🖊️

Behind every session is a lot more thinking, feeling, and intention than people often see 🤍

My favourite small luxuries at the moment- Speech Therapist Edition:

Most days are busy, back-to-back sessions, lots of talking, lots of listening, and usually a cold cup of tea somewhere in the mix.

So I’ve started really appreciating the in-between bits a bit more…

☕️ Tea in a mug I actually like (when I get to drink it warm)
🚗 Family day trips- time away from work, just being together laughing and being silly!
🥐 Bakery visits- coffee and my fav pastry!

Nothing groundbreaking, just small things that make the days feel a bit softer and a bit more balanced.

Because sometimes it’s not about big breaks… just small pauses that help you reset and go again 🙌🏻

“I know I should sleep… but the voices in my head go…” 😅

…so here I am, scrolling TPT at 11pm again looking for the perfect speech therapy resources.

Any other SLTs guilty of late-night planning sessions? 🙋‍♀️

Speech therapy tips for 12-18 months 💬

At this age, children are learning so much about language and everyday moments are full of opportunities to help them communicate!

Here are some simple strategies you can try:

👀 Turn everyday moments into language- snack time, bath time, tidy up… everything can be a chance to talk.

💬 Comment on what your child is doing- instead of asking lots of questions, narrate their actions: “You’re stacking the blocks!”

🔁 Repeat key words- hearing words over and over helps them stick.

✅ Give choices- even simple ones like “apple or banana?” lets your child communicate in a meaningful way.

➕ Expand what your child says- if they say “car”, you can add “red car” or “fast car!”

🎉 Get excited about communication- show your enthusiasm when they make sounds, words, or gestures.

💛 Language grows through connection- the more you connect, follow their lead, and respond to their communication, the more their skills will develop.

Small changes like these can make a big difference in your child’s communication journey.

If your toddler isn’t talking yet… you’re in the right place 🤍

I know how easy it is to fall into the spiral of- “are they just a late talker?” “should I be worried?” or “am I overthinking this?”

You might have been told to wait or that they’ll catch up or that every child develops differently.

And while that can be true, it doesn’t make the uncertainty any easier.

That’s exactly why I’m here. I’m a speech therapist, and I share simple, realistic ways to support your child’s communication without overwhelm, pressure, or guesswork.

So if something’s been on your mind, you’re not alone and you don’t have to figure it out by yourself.

Follow along for support, clarity, and practical tips you can actually use at home.
