Whilst working in the Creche facility Fiona was responsible for children with an age range from 12 months to 5 years of age. Safety and well-being of the children was her priority and identifying and meeting the needs of the child. Within her role, she was responsible for tasks involving play, teaching social skills and child development/ behaviour. This role helped her gain experience in teaching children at such a tender age, and how important it is to be warm and caring in this profession to be able to succeed in this line of work. Fiona also gained invaluable experience working at The Jonah Project an ASD Unit in Waterford. Working as an ABA Tutor for students with a primary diagnosis of Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) at the time there were 7 students in the school between the age of 4 and 11 years. Fiona worked with students ranging between 9 and 11 years. The students also had varying levels of disability and challenging behaviour. In Fiona's role she was responsible for running the daily programs and identifying any problems within the program for the designated student. She gained direct experience working with students who use an ACC device (Alternative Augmentative Communication). Also working with a variety of behavioural techniques which she learnt to apply to her work. To date Fiona continues to work self employed as a Special Needs Tutor on Home Tuition Programs in and around Waterford City with a wider age range. Fiona continued to study with the Open University (UK) for a further 2 years, obtaining a Adv. Diploma in Education specialising in Child Development in the family, social and school setting. After completing, she went on to do a Msc. in Psychology specialising in Brain Behaviour and ABA First Steps in Autism Certificate with Shine Ireland. Fiona recently finished studying with the University of Chester specialising in Post Graduate study on the Special Educational Needs & Disability Programme. Fiona has graduate membership with The British Psychological Society (BPS) and The Psychological Society of Ireland (PSI) where she continues to enhance her skills Continuing Professional Development (CPD) on a regular basis to keep up-to-date with new and upcoming research in the area of Child Psychology. Fiona also has been certified by Cornell University, Residential Child Care Project, New York in Crisis Intervention Training and holds Certificate in First Aid & Medical Training Services as Occupational First Aider. With continued postgraduate study, she continues to educate herself in this area but she has the drive and passion to succeed and help make a difference in a child's learning experience. Quote

This is the best list I’ve seen to make sure you are connecting with your child on a deeper level, I found that this really does help develop closeness but most of all when I connect with my own child 💙

The little moments, the little things, are very often the things are that big to your kids. As Winnie the pooh said, "sometimes the smallest things take up the most room in your heart".

Do you agree? Bouncing back from mistakes we have made is a core life skill that our children should learn. Why? Well, being able to bounce back or be resilient helps us all to feel much better about how we tackled difficult situations in our day. The way we overcame obstacles through perseverance and determination makes us feel proud and further develops a growth mindset. A mindset that teaches children that can become good at anything they put their minds to.
