Ian Ramsay
Passed away suddenly, yet peacefully, at the Countess of Chester Hospital on Sunday 20th July, aged 78. A much loved and treasured father to Simon, and cherished older brother to Liz, Ian was born in Glasgow in 1947 before moving across the border to Whitehaven at the tender age of nine. After completing his studies, and beginning a lifelong love affair with golf whilst a member of St Bees Golf Club, he relocated to Chester in the late 1960s and subsequently began working for Cheshire County Council, where he stayed for the best part of three decades, gradually rising to the top, before retiring to live the good life in 1997.
As well as being an extremely popular member of Chester Golf Club for over 50 years, which included a successful stint as Club President, Ian had a deep-rooted passion for trains, in particular The Settle-Carlisle Railway line, and was a devout lover of all things sport. During his youth he excelled as a goalkeeper, playing semi-professionally for Workington, and throughout his life partook in a literal cornucopia of wide-ranging pursuits. From Cricket to Athletics, Snooker to Tennis, and all points in-between, it would probably be quicker to list the number of sports he wasn't interested in.
As well as being a huge fan of Horse Racing, not to mention season ticket holder at Chester FC, dedicated follower of Liverpool & Glasgow Rangers football teams, and member of Hoole History society, he was also a faithful viewer of Countdown who excelled at the numbers games and, allegedly, even managed to solve their brain-bending climactic conundrum. Twice.
Easily the most reliable and dependable person you could hope to have in your life - reflected by the fact he was a dedicated unpaid carer for his son for many years - to say he will be greatly missed by all who knew him is an understatement. Whenever anyone was in trouble, struggling or needed a friendly shoulder, he was always there to help. Always without question. Always unconditionally. Ian made a huge impact on everyone who knew him and will be lovingly remembered by all who were fortunate enough to cross his path. His funeral will be held at Blacon Crematorium on Monday 4th August at 10am.
