🌟 Consultants in the Community 🌟

Last week, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon Charles Ayekoloye gave an enlightening presentation on Orthopaedics for the Walton Women's Instutute at St Johns Church.
The discussion centered around Hip and Knee replacements as well as our 'one stop pre-assessment' clinics. Charles also touched on the fascinating history of hip replacements! 🦡
Its wonderful to engage with the community, sharing our expertise and promoting awareness of Barlborough Hospital and the services we offer πŸ₯

πŸ‘οΈ Is driving at night becoming harder?
As the clocks go back this weekend and evenings get darker, you might notice more glare, cloudy vision, or trouble adjusting to low light - all common signs of cataracts.

πŸ“… To help, Practice Plus Group Hospital, Barlborough is offering FREE drop-in eye health checks next week:
πŸ—“ Monday 27th & Wednesday 29th October
πŸ•˜ 9am – 3pm
πŸ“ Practice Plus Group Hospital, Barlborough - 2 Lindrick Way, Barlborough, Chesterfield S43 4XE
No appointment needed - just pop in!

Professor Yang, our Consultant Ophthalmologist, explains:
β€œWhen the clocks go back, many people with cataracts struggle more in dim light or with headlight glare. If you notice cloudy vision, glare, or worsening night sight, don’t ignore it - early treatment can restore your vision and confidence.”

✨ Cataract surgery can make a life-changing difference - clearer sight, safer driving, and greater independence.
πŸ‘‰ NHS patients can ask their GP for a referral to us, and private patients can contact Wellsoon Private Healthcare on 0330 818 8945 or visit www.practiceplusgroup.com.
Let’s keep our community safe and seeing clearly this autumn. πŸ‚

🌟 Creating on Governance Day 🌟

This week, Barlborough Hospital hosted their bi-monthly Clinical Governance Day, which means there's minimal patient activity in the hospital, giving us some protected and dedicated time for clinical meetings and training.

Staff participated in a poppy-making craft session where we crocheted, knitted, and felted poppies in preperation for remembrance Day! 🧢🧡πŸͺ‘βœ‚οΈ

Keep an eye out next month for our display in the outpatients area! πŸ‘€

Supporting a Local Foodbank

Recently, Gleadless Valley Foodbank faced the threat of shutting down due to increasing costs and a drop in donations. This charity aids thousands of at-risk individuals each year, including local families in need, by offering emergency food supplies.

After National Food Bank Day on Saturday, September 6th, and witnessing the challenges faced by Gleadless Valley Foodbank on social media, staff at Barlborough Hospital have donated essential supplies today, allowing the food bank to continue its important work in the community, assisting those who need it most.

The charity is located on Blackstock Road, Gleadless, Sheffield, and also runs a community pantry shop where residents can buy items at significantly lower prices.

If you think you can contribute in any way, please reach out: https://www.facebook.com/GleadlessValleyFoodBankSheffield

Jeans for Jeans Day πŸ‘–

Staff at Barlborough Hospital proudly donned their jeans today to help raise awareness for Genetic Disorders UK, an organisation that supports families impacted by genetic diseases.
We also boosted our fundraising efforts by buying some tasty themed treats created by our amazing catering team πŸ§πŸ˜‹
In the UK, it's estimated that 1 in 25 children are impacted by a genetic disorder, with approximately 30,000 new diagnoses each year.
Jeans for Genes promotes scientific research and offers assistance to affected families and organisations such as Children's Medical Research Insitiute and Genetic Disorders UK.

🌟Every Woman Day🌟

We are delighted to acknowledge the dedication of our theatre colleague, Cheryl Hamilton, who is currently persuing the Happ FdSc Professional Practice Health and Social Care - Foundation Degree at Sheffield Hallam University and The Sheffield College πŸŽ“ Once she completes her studies, Cheryl will take on the role of Assistant Practitioner in Theatre.

As part of her coursework, Cheryl delivered a presentation on endometriosis, and on this Every Woman Day, we are excited to highlight womens's health issues, including conditions like endometriosis that are frequently overlooked or misunderstood.

Endometriosis impacts 1 in 10 women in the UK and 10% of women globally. On average, it takes 8 years and 10 months to receive a diagnosis from the initial visit to the GP. The economic burden of endrometriosis on the UK amounts to Β£8.2 billion annually due to tratment, lost work and healthcare expenses! πŸ₯

Today we unite with to elevate women's health on both professional and public agendas!

A big thank you to Cheryl for initiating these important discussions with staff and patients at Barlborough Hospital and for raising awareness about this condition! πŸ‘
