Pride Month is an annual celebration that takes place in June to honour the LGBTQ+ community. The month is marked by a series of events, including parades, marches, rallies, and educational programmes, all aimed at promoting equal rights, increasing visibility, and fostering a sense of community and solidarity among LGBTQ+ individuals and allies.
Happy Pride Month! 🏳️🌈
Pride Month is about acceptance, equality, and celebrating the work of LGBTQIA+ people – with parades and events all over the world.
Pride began with the Stonewall uprising of 1969 – protests in response to police raids in gay bars in New York. These events took place in the context of discrimination and persecution against the LGBTQIA+ community. The first UK Pride Rally took place a few years later in London.
📢 Every June, Pride Month honours the history of Stonewall, and the activism it sparked that has pushed LGBTQIA+ rights forward.
When it comes to mental health, both the celebration and activism that comes with Pride Month is important.
We all deserve to be who we are, and love who we love, without fear, discrimination, or persecution. Being able to be our true selves is vital to our good mental health. And there is no place for discrimination or prejudice in a mentally healthy society.
You deserve to have pride in who you are. 💜
