A teacher had a group of four students. He told the group, “Go to the market, buy ghee, and come back.” The first student heard only the word “Go” and immediately left—permanently! The second student heard only “Go to the market” and rushed to the market, only to realize that he neither knew why he was there nor what to buy. The third student heard the entire instruction. He went to the market and purchased ghee. As he was walking back with the container of ghee in his hand, a question entered his head: “Is the ghee supported by the container, or is the container supported by the ghee?” Preoccupied with this absurd question, the student overturned the container and the ghee fell out! Only the fourth student returned successfully with the ghee.

Krishnamacharya narrated the parable to illustrate his point that a student should use intelligent, patient effort to fully understand a teacher’s message and not take out of context what the teacher says at any one time.

If yoga is to be kept alive over time and transmitted without distortion, four conditions need to be satisfied. One, the teacher should be knowledgeable and experienced. Two, the student should be capable and should make the effort to correctly understand the teaching. Three, the student should practice and apply what is described in the teachings, so that it does not remain merely theoretical knowledge. Four, when he is ready, the student should propagate the teachings.
