👣 Foot Care Friday
Cracked Heels – How to Manage

Cracked heels happen when skin becomes too dry or too soft, making it prone to painful splits, and infection if ignored.

💡 Key causes:
• Long periods standing or excess weight
• Open-back shoes like flip flops
• Medical conditions like diabetes, eczema, or psoriasis

🏠 Self care at home:
✔️ Gently file 2 - 3 times per week (don’t overdo it)
✔️ Moisturise daily with a urea-based cream

👩‍⚕️ If you are struggling to manage, seek professional help:
We remove hard skin layer by layer with sterile instruments, reduce pressure safely, and treat the cause, not just the symptom. Plus, we give expert advice on footwear and creams to help your heels heal properly.

Summer is around the corner, don’t tolerate painful or uncomfortable heels, help is here in Hasland

✨Wellness Wednesday✨

It’s going to be a warm sunny day, so a great opportunity to get outside, and enjoy some fresh air and gentle exercise. As well as keeping your feet strong and supple, a simple walk will provide you with all the additional benefits:

🌿 1. Improves mood
Natural light and fresh air help boost serotonin levels, which can lift mood and reduce feelings of stress or low mood.

🧠 2. Clears the mind
Walking supports cognitive function, improves focus, and often enhances problem-solving and creativity.

❤️ 3. Supports heart health
Regular walking strengthens the heart, improves circulation, and can help lower blood pressure.

😌 4. Reduces stress and anxiety
Being in nature helps calm the nervous system and lower cortisol levels.

💪 5. Increases energy
Even a 10–15 minute walk can reduce fatigue and increase alertness.

🌞 6. Vitamin D boost
Exposure to sunlight supports vitamin D production, which is important for bone health and immune function.

💤 7. Better sleep
Daily movement and natural light exposure help regulate your body clock.

Even a short walk around the block on a regular basis can make a noticeable difference, even better grab a friend or family member to join you.

🚶 Welcome the spring with a new habit 🚶‍♀️

🩺 Whole-Body Health Starts With Your Feet

Your feet are your foundation. If they’re not doing their job efficiently, your knees and hips end up picking up the slack.
We know we need to work our core, legs and arms to stay toned and in shape, yet we allow our feet to become weak and lazy by squeezing them into shoes and cushioning them so much that they can’t do the job they were designed for
Strong, healthy feet should be able to:
✅ Absorb shock
✅ Distribute load and adapt to movement
✅ Maintain balance as you move
✅ Support the knees and hips

When feet lack strength and mobility, they become weak and stiff. That’s when the joints above have to compensate, often leading to poor movement patterns, pain, and over time, reduced stability.
Just a few minutes a day working on foot strength and mobility can make a huge difference, especially for long-term joint health and falls prevention.

🩺 Whole-Body Health Starts with Your Feet
🚶‍♀️ Falls Prevention & Foot Health

Did you know that, according to NHS England, around one third of people over 65 and half of those over 80 experience at least one fall each year?

What’s particularly concerning is that many of these falls are preventable, and your foot health plays a vital role in keeping you steady, mobile and confident.

Your feet are your foundation. When something isn’t quite right, it can directly affect your balance, posture and overall stability.
Common foot problems which may increase your risk of falling include:

🦶 Thickened, fungal or painful nails
🦶 Corns and callus
🦶 Bunions and toe deformities
🦶 Plantar fasciitis and heel pain
🦶 Reduced sensation (neuropathy)
🦶 Foot or ankle arthritis
🦶 Weak foot and ankle strength
🦶 Poorly fitting or unsupportive footwear

Even minor discomfort can cause subtle changes in the way you walk, increasing instability without you even realising.

Looking after your feet isn’t just about comfort, it’s about maintaining independence, confidence and overall wellbeing.

👣 Foot Condition Spotlight: Hammer & Mallet Toes 👣

Ever wondered why your toes sometimes bend or curl?

Hammer toes bend at the middle joint, and mallet toes bend at the tip. They often develop from things like tight shoes, weak foot muscles, or not moving your toes enough. Complications can include corns and calluses which can be painful, and balance can be affected

We can help you by:
* Taking care of corns and calluses
* Providing footwear advice and recommendations
* Educate on simple toe and foot exercises to help strengthen your feet

Here’s a quick one you can try at home:
Seated or standing, anchor the ball of the foot to the floor, lift and spread your toes - hold for 5 seconds, repeat 8–10 times each day.

Strong toes = better balance and happier feet! 👣

If your curly toes are causing you a problem we can help

👣 Foot Condition Spotlight: Chilblains 😣

As colder weather sets in, chilblains become more common. These painful, itchy areas appear as red, shiny areas on the toes (sometimes fingers, ears, or nose) due to inflammation of small blood vessels when skin is exposed to cold.

Common Triggers:
❄️ Cold or damp conditions
🔥 Rapid hot-to-cold temperature shifts
🚬 Smoking
🩸 Poor circulation or underlying health conditions

While there’s no miracle cream to fix chilblains, managing the symptoms is crucial.

Here’s what helps:

✔️ Keep feet warm with soft, layered socks.
✔️ Avoid re-warming the skin too quickly, don’t press feet directly against heaters.
✔️ Wear slippers indoors and supportive shoes with thicker soles outdoors.
✔️ Change damp socks immediately.
✔️ Moisturise daily to prevent dry skin and cracking.
✔️ Stay active to improve circulation.

Padding and dressings can help to insulate and protect, but avoid sticking anything to broken skin. If symptoms worsen or skin breaks, consult your GP or podiatrist.

Takeaway: Chilblains are best managed by keeping feet warm and avoiding extreme temperature shifts.
Prevention is your best defense!
