The Education and Apprenticeship team are delighted to announce that Carlie Watts has won apprentice of the year at the Chichester Chamber of Commerce & Industry awards. This is her story.
In June 2020, I started my new job at the Royal Sussex County Hospital, as a flow coordinator… although I loved my job, I started to watch the nurses and healthcare assistants running around the A&E department, saving lives and being incredible.
In 2022, I went for a run with two of the band 7 nurses in A&E and told them my new dream. I finally, at the ripe age of 44 knew I wanted to do! I want to be a nurse!
They encouraged me to go for a job as a healthcare assistant in A&E, which I did and had a successful interview.
I spoke to the education practitioners in our department, and the trust Education and Apprenticeship team, they advised me to get my Maths functional skills, (I wish I'd worked harder at school!) and to enrol for the Senior Healthcare Support Worker Level 3 apprenticeship.
I passed both level 1 and 2 functional skills maths by the beginning of 2024 and started my apprenticeship.
My apprenticeship is almost complete, and I am applying for the Student Nursing Associate Apprenticeship, hoping to start next year.
If you had told me, I would be able to achieve my dream, I would have never believed you. I absolutely love my job and can’t wait for what the future holds. As a single mum, I turned my life around for my three amazing children.
The whole team in A&E, the Education and Apprenticeship team, Chichester College, and my Assessor Grace, have continually supported me and walked this path with me.
Cathy Medlow Head of Education and Apprenticeships says, "Congratulations on winning this award Carlie, you are an inspiration and an example of how using the apprenticeship route the trust supports staff to fulfil their dreams. I look forwards to seeing you progress through the rest of your journey"
Carlie was nominated for apprentice of the year in recognition of her commitment to her apprenticeship, always meeting deadlines, showing initiative and her determination to complete her apprenticeship before the agreed end date. Carlie was one of five shortlisted for apprentice of the year category.
