The Youth Fairy Chichester

The Youth Fairy Chichester Solution Focused therapy for children, teens and young adults I am an LGBTQ+ friendly therapist.

Hello ๐Ÿ‘‹ I'm Julie, therapist at The Youth Fairy, a growing team of solution-focused therapists who help children, teens and young adults struggling with anxiety, stress, anger, emotional control and low confidence. We use modern, brain-based approaches, including Solution Focused Hypnotherapy and Psychotherapy, that actively encourage young people to:

๐Ÿงš Re-focus on the positive aspects of life
๐Ÿงš Recognise strengths
๐Ÿงš Improve quality of sleep
๐Ÿงš Engage more in positive activities
๐Ÿงš Engage more in positive interactions
๐Ÿงš Feel more emotionally in control

I work with children from 7 years old to young adults and am able to adapt my approach to work with those with additional needs, special educational needs, disabilities and neurodiversity. Areas I work with include:

โ€ข Anxiety
โ€ข Stress and overwhelm
โ€ข Low mood
โ€ข Anger management
โ€ข Social anxiety
โ€ข Low self-esteem
โ€ข Low confidence
โ€ข Emetophobia (fear of vomiting)
โ€ข Agoraphobia
โ€ข Exam anxiety and stress
โ€ข Trauma
โ€ข Self-harm
โ€ข Sleep problems

I was drawn to the solution-focused approach because it places children at the forefront, empowering them to recognise and harness their remarkable strengths. It minimises the need to dwell extensively on past trauma or problems. Instead, it centres on identifying how they aspire to feel, behave, or cope differently, ultimately guiding them towards a more positive future.

๐ŸŒŸAbout Me ๐ŸŒŸ

Before my life as a Youth Fairy, I worked for many years in the Education sector and as part of my role I mentored young people who were experiencing difficulties. I also worked as a coach on government funded programmes, working with people and families experiencing a wide variety of issues in their lives such as grief, financial difficulties, depression and anxiety, helping them to regain their confidence and transform their lives. With this experience behind me, I decided to train in Solution Focused Hypnotherapy and Psychotherapy; I had noticed that when people were talking about how they would like things to be, they became more motivated and positive, just thinking about the steps they would take to achieve a better future.

๐ŸŒŸ Next Steps ๐ŸŒŸ

๐Ÿงš Before a young person decides if they would like to work with me, I offer a complimentary, 1-hour initial consultation, which is an opportunity for you both to meet me to discuss best hopes.

๐Ÿงš As well as helping young people make positive changes, educating them on their well-being is something I know to be an important part of the change process.

๐Ÿงš So, in the consultation, Iโ€™ll explain to you and your child how the brain works (in an age-appropriate way) to create their specific problems and associated feelings, behaviours or symptoms and how I can help.

๐ŸŒŸ This understanding can be really motivational to children as they realise there is hope, see more clearly what we can do about it and supports them in developing more positive, healthy habits for life.

๐ŸŒŸ This knowledge is super helpful for you as a parent too - it allows for greater understanding, creates a common language to talk more easily with your child about their well-being and gives you specific ideas of how you can best support the process (and beyond). Youโ€™ll also get my relaxation audio download to help improve any sleep problems they are having and support the process. ๐Ÿ˜ด๐Ÿ˜ด๐Ÿ˜ด

I hold an up-to-date Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) certificate and am proud to be a member of the following professional bodies:

โ€ข National Council for Hypnotherapy (NCH)
โ€ข Association for Solution Focused Hypnotherapy (AfSFH)
โ€ข Complementary and National Health Council (CNHC)
โ€ข National Board of Modern Psychotherapy (NBMP)

๐ŸŒŸ ON THE BLOG ๐ŸŒŸ

School can be a challenging time for friendships: Especially after school holidays or a big move when children are;

๐Ÿ‘‰ reuniting with friends
๐Ÿ‘‰ changing friendship groups or
๐Ÿ‘‰ having to confront previous conflicts or
๐Ÿ‘‰ breakdowns in friendships

Moving to a new school, can feel overwhelming and like starting friendships from scratch.

Friendships move to a new level with the move to secondary school around the age of 11 and through secondary school. Friendships become more intimate, mutually beneficial and two-sided.

๐Ÿคฏ Navigating friendships is not easy and itโ€™s particularly difficult for our teenagers who are managing an influx of hormones.
๐Ÿคฏ Now letโ€™s be clear, these hormones are largely responsible in encouraging our teens to lean towards being in a more reactive state, driven by fear or pleasure and any previous survival tactics.
๐Ÿคฏ Put this together with the fact that the others in their friendship circle are likely to be managing the same hormone influx and you can see why they are often having to navigate relationship conflict.

When our children have good friendships, they are better equipped to:

๐Ÿ˜„ Deal with challenges that life throws at them
๐Ÿ˜„ Develop the skills of empathy and reasoning
๐Ÿ˜„ Build healthy boundaries and resilience
๐Ÿ˜„ Learn to successfully navigate conflict.
๐Ÿ˜„ Develop a sense of self and independence
๐Ÿ˜„ Create an additional support network

We all need friends. We know that we are happier when we are part of a tribe. This tribe can be within our family but also often extends to our peers and the friendships we develop.

Friendship is good for our brain. Good friendship is good for our brain. Good friendships benefit us, they are good for our emotional and mental well-being. But good friendships do not come easily, they can be difficult to foster, manage and maintain.

So, what can we do to support our children in developing positive, healthy friendships?

๐Ÿ˜’ On the Blog ๐Ÿ˜’ Did you know today is World Toilet Day?!

Toilet anxiety in children is a common yet often overlooked issue that can cause significant stress and discomfort for your child, but also can lead to a great deal of stress and worry for you as a parent too.

From fear of using public toilets, to holding on to urine or stool, or feeling overwhelmed by the sensory experiences of toilets, such as a flushing toilet or noisy hand dryers, toilet phobia can be debilitating for a child, fuelling anxiety for not only the child but the whole family too.

๐Ÿ˜” And, like any form of anxiety, the more we worry for our children, the more it can fuel this negative cycle.

If your child shows signs of anxiety around using the toilet, itโ€™s important to help them to break this negative association.

In this weekโ€™s blog, we look at:
๐Ÿ˜’What toilet anxiety is
๐Ÿ˜’How to recognise it
๐Ÿ˜’The problems it can cause
๐Ÿ˜’And provide some practical tips for you to try at home

So, head on over to The Parent Pad to read this weekโ€™s blog in full!
