The Youth Fairy Chichester

The Youth Fairy Chichester Solution Focused therapy for children, teens and young adults I am an LGBTQ+ friendly therapist.

Hello 👋 I'm Julie, therapist at The Youth Fairy, a growing team of solution-focused therapists who help children, teens and young adults struggling with anxiety, stress, anger, emotional control and low confidence. We use modern, brain-based approaches, including Solution Focused Hypnotherapy and Psychotherapy, that actively encourage young people to:

🧚 Re-focus on the positive aspects of life
🧚 Recognise strengths
🧚 Improve quality of sleep
🧚 Engage more in positive activities
🧚 Engage more in positive interactions
🧚 Feel more emotionally in control

I work with children from 7 years old to young adults and am able to adapt my approach to work with those with additional needs, special educational needs, disabilities and neurodiversity. Areas I work with include:

• Anxiety
• Stress and overwhelm
• Low mood
• Anger management
• Social anxiety
• Low self-esteem
• Low confidence
• Emetophobia (fear of vomiting)
• Agoraphobia
• Exam anxiety and stress
• Trauma
• Self-harm
• Sleep problems

I was drawn to the solution-focused approach because it places children at the forefront, empowering them to recognise and harness their remarkable strengths. It minimises the need to dwell extensively on past trauma or problems. Instead, it centres on identifying how they aspire to feel, behave, or cope differently, ultimately guiding them towards a more positive future.

🌟About Me 🌟

Before my life as a Youth Fairy, I worked for many years in the Education sector and as part of my role I mentored young people who were experiencing difficulties. I also worked as a coach on government funded programmes, working with people and families experiencing a wide variety of issues in their lives such as grief, financial difficulties, depression and anxiety, helping them to regain their confidence and transform their lives. With this experience behind me, I decided to train in Solution Focused Hypnotherapy and Psychotherapy; I had noticed that when people were talking about how they would like things to be, they became more motivated and positive, just thinking about the steps they would take to achieve a better future.

🌟 Next Steps 🌟

🧚 Before a young person decides if they would like to work with me, I offer a complimentary, 1-hour initial consultation, which is an opportunity for you both to meet me to discuss best hopes.

🧚 As well as helping young people make positive changes, educating them on their well-being is something I know to be an important part of the change process.

🧚 So, in the consultation, I’ll explain to you and your child how the brain works (in an age-appropriate way) to create their specific problems and associated feelings, behaviours or symptoms and how I can help.

🌟 This understanding can be really motivational to children as they realise there is hope, see more clearly what we can do about it and supports them in developing more positive, healthy habits for life.

🌟 This knowledge is super helpful for you as a parent too - it allows for greater understanding, creates a common language to talk more easily with your child about their well-being and gives you specific ideas of how you can best support the process (and beyond). You’ll also get my relaxation audio download to help improve any sleep problems they are having and support the process. 😴😴😴

I hold an up-to-date Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) certificate and am proud to be a member of the following professional bodies:

• National Council for Hypnotherapy (NCH)
• Association for Solution Focused Hypnotherapy (AfSFH)
• Complementary and National Health Council (CNHC)
• National Board of Modern Psychotherapy (NBMP)

⭐️ On the Blog ⭐️

Next week is Children’s Mental Health Week, the mental health charity mind estimates that around 1 in every 100 people in England are diagnosed with Panic Disorder every week. This is a startling figure and, discouragingly, is a mental health condition that is on the rise.

🧠 We all experience feelings of anxiety and panic from time to time, in response to stress or significant life events. Panic Disorder, however, is a form of anxiety disorder where an individual will have bouts of extreme anxiety, panic, or intense fear, frequently and seemingly for no apparent cause. It can be extremely frightening for an individual suffering from the disorder and the feeling of being ‘out of control’ can become so overwhelming that a person may avoid certain situations or stop leaving home altogether in an attempt to prevent a panic or anxiety attack. Sadly, this desire to feel more in control can start a negative chain of events that only serves to exacerbate the condition.

🧠 Whilst anxiety disorders are the most common mental health condition in childhood, Panic Disorder is rare in young children and, in most cases, begins during the teenage years. This is thought to be linked to changes that are happening in the brain at this key stage of development. Panic Disorder may occur in response to significant life events or extreme stress in a young person’s life. It can manifest in such a way that it causes significant disruption to an individual’s day-to-day life, resulting in panic attacks in response to everyday stressful events, particularly those that place more pressure on a young person, such as exams.

The symptoms of a panic attack might include:

👉 Breathing uncontrollably
👉 Feeling of not being able to catch a breath
👉 A racing or pounding heart
👉 Sweating
👉 Shaking or trembling uncontrollably
👉 A tightness in the throat
👉 Feeling dizzy or light-headed
👉 Feeling very cold or very hot
👉 An uncomfortable feeling or pain in the stomach or chest
👉 Nausea
👉 A sudden urge to use the toilet
👉 Ringing in the ears
👉 Feeling as if your mind is not connected to your body, often described as an odd feeling of being disconnected from your surroundings.

So, if any of this sounds familiar, head on over to the Parent Pad and read our blog in full to find out:

✨ How panic attacks are caused, including how the stress or panic response is activated in the brain.
✨ How to support your child with panic attacks or feelings of anxiety.
✨ Strategies you can try with your child at home.

😔 On the Blog 😔 Emetophobia – supporting your child to overcome the fear of vomiting 😰

As parents, we strive to create a safe and nurturing environment for our children, helping them navigate the many challenges they may encounter. However, when your child is struggling with a fear that may seem irrational or overwhelming, like emetophobia—the intense fear of vomiting—it can be difficult to know how to offer the right support.

😰 Emetophobia is the term used to describe an intense and often debilitating fear of vomiting. This fear can extend to the possibility of others vomiting or even just hearing someone mention sickness. For those with emetophobia, the fear can be so overwhelming that it disrupts daily life—leading to avoidance of:

😰 Certain foods
😰 Social situations
😰 and even places like schools or public transport where they feel there’s a risk of encountering vomit.

While many of us might feel uneasy at the thought of being sick, emetophobia is a more extreme reaction, often accompanied by high levels of anxiety, panic attacks, and obsessive behaviours aimed at avoiding the feared situation.
In this blog, we explore:

👉 What emetophobia is
👉 The signs you can look out for
👉 The neuroscience behind this fear
👉 And, most importantly, how you can help your child manage and overcome it.

💙 On the Blog 💙
It can be difficult to reconcile that a child might be depressed. Depression is often something we think of as being an ‘adult’ mental health disorder. We can think that it comes later in life when, as adults, life has become more difficult and overwhelming.

😔 But depression is something that is also seen in children and the aim of this blog is to highlight some of the ways you may be able to spot depression and ways that you may be able to support your child.

😔 If you are concerned that your child is depressed, please contact your GP in the first instance. There are a number of charities and organisations that can also help to support you and some of these are signposted at the bottom of this blog.

😔 Just like any mental health disorders, depression has different levels and if we are able to spot the early signs, we may be able to make small changes that can make a difference before it worsens.

What does depression look like in children?

It is a change from their ‘normal’ behaviour. This may include (some but not all) of the following:

☹️ Increased tiredness, lack of energy
☹️ Decreased interest in activities they used to enjoy
☹️ Increased grumpiness, over-reacting emotionally
☹️ Sadness or low-mood that doesn’t lift
☹️ Changes in eating patterns; not having an appetite or wanting to overeat
☹️ Not wanting to spend time with friends or family
☹️ Finding it more difficult to focus or concentrate
☹️ Feeling less confident and less able to make decisions.
☹️ Changes in sleeping; unable to sleep or always wanting to sleep and not wanting to get out of bed

If you are concerned about your child, please take a moment to take a read of our blog. Early intervention is always the best approach.
