“It sometimes seems as if evidence is cherry picked to underpin arguments for routine induction, regardless of whether or not that evidence is robust.”

Those are strong words, I know.

But I stand by them, because I have spent more than twenty years researching induction of labour and analysing the research and guidelines carried out and written by others.

Often, the evidence is flawed or non-existent. Sometimes, recommendations are based on expert opinion rather than the outcomes of robust research.

And it’s not that I don’t value those who have spent many years studying a topic and honing specialist knowledge and skills. I value them very much. I’m one of them.

It’s that there is also a wider picture to consider, and we also need to think about the belief systems that are held by different groups, and how these can affect what we offer or recommend.

If you’d like to know more, I wrote a book which looks at all of these issues and many more.

It’s called “In Your Own Time: How western medicine controls the start of labour and why this needs to stop.”

What are the best questions to ask if you're offered induction of labour?

As someone who has researched and written about induction of labour for more than two decades, I get asked that quite a bit.

Especially as I have a fundamental belief that there is no one 'right' path for everyone.

Twenty years before anyone hashtagged , I was promoting that very idea to women and families.

One size doesn't fit all.

You need to decide what's right for you.

And in order to do that, you might need to ask some questions.

So I have put together this guide to the five best questions that you can ask in order to get more information and make the decisions that are right for you.

I'm also going to tell you what can you learn from the answers you are given.

You can find my blog post at https://www.sarawickham.com/articles-2/five-questions-to-ask-if-youre-offered-induction-of-labour/

I hope you'll find it useful.

5 Reasons Pregnancy Yoga is Perfect for Chichester Mums-to-Be

Becoming a mum is a magical time—but it can also feel overwhelming. At our pregnancy yoga classes here in Chichester, we’re often asked, “Is yoga really helpful during pregnancy?” The answer is a gentle but confident yes.

Here are 5 reasons local mums-to-be love it:

1. Relieve Aches and Pains
Pregnancy comes with changes—some of them uncomfortable. Gentle yoga poses help ease back pain, tight hips, and those restless legs.
2. Feel Calmer and More Grounded
Our classes include breathing techniques and relaxation that help calm your nervous system. That peace often carries through your week.
3. Prepare for Birth
Yoga encourages body awareness and helps you tune into your breath—powerful tools to carry into labour and birth.
4. Meet Other Local Mums
You’ll find a supportive community here. Many of our students stay friends long after their babies are born.
5. Conveniently Located in Chichester
Our studio is just a short walk from Chichester city centre, with easy parking nearby. We welcome mums from across West Sussex.
