It’s a common misconception that all aesthetic practitioners undergo the same training before offering treatments. In reality, the level and quality of training can vary widely, especially in the UK where the industry remains largely unregulated.

While some practitioners are highly qualified medical professionals with years of clinical training, others may have completed only a brief course or online seminar before starting to practise. This disparity in training means that not every practitioner has the same depth of knowledge or ability to manage complications.

High-quality training should cover essential areas like facial anatomy, safe injection techniques and how to handle adverse reactions, but not all courses meet these standards.

Unfortunately, this lack of consistency can leave patients at risk of poorly performed treatments or unsafe practices.

If you’re tempted by cheap aesthetic treatments, understand that corners are probably being cut somewhere.

Typically, this is in one (or more) of the following places:

- poor training
- inadequate insurance
- dodgy/knock off products from unregulated sources
- cheap consumables (needles, cannulas etc)
- inappropriate treatment environment
- inadequate pre- and post-treatment care and support

When you choose a regulated medical professional, they are duty bound to keep you safe. From being appropriately insured, purchasing products from reputable pharmacies, supporting you before, during and after treatment to ensuring that they undergo continued professional development and training.

Aesthetic treatments are expensive, non-essential, medical procedures that should be administered by appropriately trained and qualified healthcare professionals.

Question time ❓ Does your moisturiser with SPF have enough protection to shield you from UV rays?

Does your day cream have an SPF of 30 or higher?
Generally it is agreed that using SPF30 or higher gives adequate protection. Many moisturisers advertise containing sun protection but have a rating of 10-15, which doesn’t cut it. User error means that SPF10-15 products could be providing negligible SPF protection.

Does your sunscreen give broad-spectrum?
Look out for ‘broad-spectrum’ protection on the moisturiser bottle, this notes that it protects against UVA rays. Unlike SPF for UVB, UVA doesn’t have international standardised testing so you may see UVA protection vary across products.

Are you applying enough cream?
‘A little goes a long way’ isn’t a good thing when it comes to sun protection - less product means less protection, so slap that SPF on. The correct amount is 2mg/cm2 but that’s tricky to measure. A good rule of thumb is 2 finger lengths, or ¼ teaspoon for the face. This amount depends on various factors, though, including the surface area of your face.

Are you reapplying throughout the day?
It’s not often that we reapply our moisturiser throughout the day, but reapplying sun protective skincare products is important to ensure protection is maintained throughout the day.
