Get ready, a Flower Full Moon is rising
Monday, May 12 brings the ๐ธFull Flower Moon๐ธ reaching peak illumination at 12:56 p.m. EDT. While you wonโt see petals in the sky, this moon gets its name from the seasonโs explosion of blooming flowers, a tribute to springโs full arrival ๐ผ๐ฟ
Despite peaking during daylight hours, youโll still be able to catch a stunning moonrise later that evening. Just after sunset, look toward the eastern horizon. If skies are clear, you might even catch the moon glowing in soft yellow or coral hues as its light is scattered by Earthโs atmosphere โจ๐
This yearโs Flower Moon will be a micromoon appearing slightly smaller and dimmer than usual, as itโs at its farthest point from Earth ๐๐ญ
But donโt let that fool you. Its beauty remains unmistakable. And if you look closely, you may spot a twinkling companion nearby: Antares, the red heart of the โScorpius constellationโ โค๏ธโญ๏ธ
In folklore, this moon signaled the start of โplanting seasonโ and the return of โFertile Earthโ๐พ The Cree called it the โBudding Moonโ or the โEgg Laying Moonโ. Others knew it as the โFrog Moonโ, as ponds came alive with croaks once again ๐ธ๐๐ธ
So whether youโre a gardener, stargazer, or moonchild at heart โ step outside Monday night and let the Flower Moon remind you that โจspring is in full swing โจ
