It's so important to hear someone when they share suicidal feelings. Often our response is to try shut them down with platitudes and reassurances because it's distressing for us to hear what they're telling us. Hearing how they are experiencing life and trying to understand can be so powerful, and supporting them in finding specialist help can make all the difference.

It's so important to dispel the myth that "asking for help" in a suicidal crisis means that someone doesn't really want to end their life. They are highly likely to be very much at risk. We must grasp the opportunity to help them while they are still seeking help.

We often hear from survivors who believe they would have died if they hadn’t been able to leave. An exit plan can make all the difference. Fewer high-pressure exams. More focus on preparing you for life beyond school. Less anxiety, fear, burnout and overwhelm. More space for joy. More freedom to explore and make mistakes. More room for mental health and wellbeing.

These are urgent changes that we are asking the Government to make.
