Don't forget the read through of Enemy of the People on Monday night 14th May at 8pm upstairs in the Wheel.

SYNOPSIS

Dr. Stockmann has discovered that the new baths built in his town are infected with a deadly disease and instructs the town to repair or close the baths. The Mayor, who is Dr. Stockmann's brother, does not believe the report and refuses to close the baths because it will cause the financial ruin of the town.

Dr. Stockmann tries to take his case to the people, but the mayor intercedes and explains to the people how much it will cost to repair the baths. He explains that the Doctor is always filled with wild, fanciful ideas. In a public meeting, he has his brother declared an enemy of the people. The doctor decides to leave the town, but at the last minute comes to the realization that he must stay and fight for the things he believes to be right.

The Management Committee are considering mounting a stage production, of the 1991 Alan Parker film BUGSY MALONE, next Spring. It's a good script and would be great fun.

This would be a departure from the customary pantomimes and Spring productions as it would involve an all children cast (ages 10-16 probably). With some girls having to fill boys' roles.

We have many of the key personnel we need but to pull it off well we would need strong support from childrens' parents and in particular we need:

A producer to help make arrangements.

A pianist to help with music and teaching the cast a few songs.

A choreographer to help create a few basic dance routines.

The committee meets next on Wednesday 15 Nov and before then we would like to gauge the interest of members and potential parents. Please message me if you think you could help.

Marshfield Players Spring Production

The Pied Piper by Adrian Mitchell

Rats! Rats! Rats! For several days in March the German town of Hamelin (also known as Marshfield Community Centre) was besieged by a plague of pestilent rodents! This well known story was brought to life by Sue Weston, Zina Fallon and their fantastic crew. With the townsfolk on the brink of revolt and the Mayor in despair, the mysterious Piper appears and agrees to rid the town of the plague in return for one thousand golden pounds. Kaija Brunyate’s brilliant portrayal of the enigmatic Piper, with her vivacious attire, witty repartee and soulful singing kept us all intrigued. The play seamlessly brought together the talents of both experienced actors and newcomers to the stage, with many children making their Players debut. The intimate staging and interaction with the audience added to the atmosphere at this colourful, amusing, quirky and thoroughly entertaining production.

As parents, we were so impressed with the finely tuned machine that is the Marshfield Players, combining the skills and expertise of so many, from David Colbourne’s expert stage crew, professional lighting and sound, to beautiful costumes, props and set design. We felt very lucky that our children were able to be involved in such a fun production involving all ages, right on our doorstep! Thank you Marshfield Players.

Date for the diary: The Players are supporting a Murder Mystery Play to be performed in Marshfield on 24 th and 25th November in aid of the charity MIND.

A big thank you to Geoff Greenwood for leading us through NOISES OFF last night and to Sue Weston for getting copies of the play. We shall probably not attempt this challenging but enjoyable Michael Frayn comedy.

The Players invite you to a read through of Michael Frayn's comedy Noises Off at 7:30pm on Monday 5th June upstairs in the Wheel (tbc).

There are 3 acts and nine roles so plenty of opportunity to read a part.

Lloyd Dallas: The director of a play-within-the-play, Nothing On. Temperamental, exacting and sarcastic. Involved with both Brooke and Poppy.

Dotty Otley: A middle-aged television star who is not only the top-billed star but also one of the play's principal investors. Dating the much younger Garry.

Garry Lejeune: The play's leading man, a solid actor who is completely incapable of finishing a sentence unless it is dialogue. Constantly stutters and ends sentences with "you know..." Dating Dotty and prone to jealousy.

Brooke Ashton: A young, inexperienced actress from London. She pays no attention to others, either in performance or backstage, and persists in her role as scripted regardless of any interruption or mayhem. She is always losing her contact lenses, which she is blind without. Part of the Lloyd–Poppy–Brooke love triangle.

Frederick (Freddie) Fellowes: Has a serious fear of violence and blood, both of which give him nosebleeds. Well-meaning, but lacks confidence and is rather dim-witted.

Belinda Blair: Cheerful and sensible, a reliable actress and the company's defacto peacemaker. Something of a gossip, and a bit two-faced. Has a rather protective attitude towards Freddie.

Selsdon Mowbray: An elderly, half-deaf "pro" with a long,
storied career and a drinking problem. If he is not in sight while rehearsing, the stage crew must find him before he finds anything alcoholic.

Poppy Norton-Taylor: Assistant Stage Manager and understudy to the female roles. Emotional, skittish and over-sensitive. Part of the Lloyd-Poppy-Brooke love triangle and, by act two, pregnant with Lloyd's baby.

Tim Allgood: The over-worked and easily flustered Stage Manager, who must understudy, fix the set and run Lloyd's errands on top of his usual duties.
