We at Yoga Focus are really pleased to be running the third Full 580hr Yoga Therapy training course in March 2025.

The course is in two parts, 50hrs Stage One Foundations with option to continue to 530hrs Stage Two to become a Professional Yoga Therapist working in Health services including NHS and Private Sector to support clients on their health journeys.

This course is also proving to be an excellent opportunity to deeply understand your own physical and mental health, which in turn helps those around you, your family, friends, and work colleagues.

The venues have been chosen specifically to align with Nature and to be within more natural environments such as at Mandala Ashram in the hills of South Wales and in the Cotswolds where we encourage immersion into beautiful countryside.

Emphasis is placed on Compassionate based practise and the natural laws of life as a guide to health and healing, but also we respect and follow up to date scientific research to enhance learning

There are a variety of superb yoga therapy trainers to learn from including, Nikki Jackson (mental health, trauma), Vicky Arundel (musculoskeletal chronic pain), Mary McCarthy from USA (somatics), Tarik Dervish (ayurveda), and many more including teachers from Mandala Ashram, Krishnapremananda, SatyaDaya.

We purposefully keep numbers on this course small so we can create a more personal approach to learning. We provide plenty of support, mentoring, and supervision throughout.

Another fabulous final week of the 2 year 550 hr Yoga Therapy professional training course at the wonderful Mandala Yoga Ashram in south Wales.
Delicious vegetarian food, wonderful meditations, hatha yoga and of course kirtan chanting as well as stunning walks on the hills.

Well done to all students for completing the 2 year course and soon, after finishing the portfolios, they will be professional yoga therapists.

20/11/2024

The psoas muscle is a thick deep core muscle connecting the spine at T12 to the legs at the lesser trochanter of the femur,  from the lower back via the groin.  It plays a significant role in trauma responses due to its connection to the nervous system.

Life Saver ?

·        when the Fight or Flight Response is activated for instance during traumatic events, the psoas muscle contracts, preparing the body for the "fight or flight" response. This is a primal survival mechanism designed to help us react quickly to danger.

Trouble maker?:

·        muscles have memories and the psoas can retain tension even after the traumatic event has passed. This can lead to chronic muscle tightness, pain, and limited mobility

·        the psoas muscle can also store emotional trauma which if unreleased can build up into chronic tension and pain

·        as the psoas muscle’s origin is connected to the diaphragm, when in tension  it can affect the movement of the diaphragm and therefore the quality of the breath and ability to calm the nervous system

·        a tight psoas can affect posture and movement, affecting hip and knee joint mobility and stability,  spinal flexibility and can cause stiffness and pain

Yoga Therapy practices to help release psoas:

·        tap and massage into the psoas origin at T12 vertebrae . Can use a deflated soft ball under lower back

·        diaphragmatic breathing: allowing diaphragm to freely move up down to massage psoas

·        Apanasana: supine knee hugs, figs of 8

·        Jathara parivartanasana: supine lying twist

·        Quadricep and psoa stretch: knees bent, feet on floor, right knee to left foot

·         Virabhadrasana I: warrior pose I

Want to learn more ?

Join us for the next Yoga Therapy training course to learn more about the psoas muscle’s role in trauma and grief and how yoga therapy can help

- The practical application of specific yoga and mindfulness tools and techniques for working with chronic pain conditions.
