A story of support: Being there when it matters most.

We first met a resident at a community pop-up while she was navigating the early stages of a lung cancer diagnosis, while waiting for her Support at Home assessment. Understanding that her condition was deteriorating, we didn't wait for a funding letter to begin our relationship. We visited her not as a service provider, but as a support system.

We sat with her to talk through her fears and provided her husband with a much-needed sounding board for his own worries about the future. Because we had built that foundation of trust, the moment her funding was assigned, she called us immediately. We commenced professional services within just three days.

We know that support starts long before your first service is booked.

If you’d like to talk through your situation, our HomeCaring Bankstown team is always here to listen.

Are you ready to access government-funded home care but not sure where to start?

To begin your journey with My Aged Care, call 1800 200 422. It's a good idea to be prepared for the call because the person on the other end wants to hear the 'why.' Don't be afraid to be specific! They need real-life examples of the care required.

Once you’ve chatted, they'll arrange an assessment to determine the level of funding you require. Usually, this is an in-person assessment in your home, but phone assessments are sometimes offered.

If you're feeling overwhelmed by the process, we’re here to support you. Contact us, and we'll guide you step by step through the entire process.

Waiting for funding? Here’s what to expect.

The ‘approved but waiting’ stage can be quite frustrating. It might feel like you and your family's lives are on hold.

To help replace that uncertainty with clarity, here’s a breakdown of how the process works:

- Funding is distributed based on the date of approval and the priority level. This is a first-come, first-served system on a national scale.

- Wait times can vary, typically ranging from 3 to over 9 months, depending on the level of care required.

- Make sure the contact details are up to date with My Aged Care.

If you have any questions about a letter, you've received or a status update that’s unclear, it’s best to contact My Aged Care directly.

What happens if the unexpected happens tomorrow?

It can happen suddenly (stroke, accident) or slowly (dementia). Either way, you and your family are often left juggling care and urgent admin tasks without clear authority to act. When a plan isn't in place, families are often left under immense pressure.

Here are some things to help with planning for unexpected events:

- Nominate someone you trust (or get professional advice) for financial decision-making
- Keep key info in one place (contacts, services, accounts)
- Don’t wait for a crisis to start the conversation.

We can help with the care side - planning supports, coordinating services, and keeping communication clear - so you’re not doing everything alone.

Maybe it was a classic family road trip in the station wagon, or just the feeling of a safer, slower time.

Today is World Health Day.

Personal health is about listening to what your body and mind need to feel sustainable, supported, and strong. It might mean saying no to an extra commitment, scheduling that check-up you've been putting off, or simply taking some time out.
