Both ice and heat have their place in TMJ management. Alternating between them can help prevent the development of chronic TMJ disorders and promote quicker recovery.
❄️ICE THERAPY
● Reduces inflammation - Constricts blood vessels, slows circulation, and decreases swelling.
● Limits joint fluid - Lowers synovial fluid production, easing pressure, and pain.
● Numbs pain - Dulls nerve activity, interrupting pain signals sent to the brain.
♡ Apply ice to the affected area surrounding the jaw for 15-20 minutes, up to six times a day for 24-48 hours following the injury/flare up.
🔥HEAT THERAPY
● Increases circulation - Heat dilates blood vessels delivering oxygen, nutrients, and immune cells to the area.
● Clears metabolic waste - Heat supports the removal of accumulated waste, reducing muscle pain and spasms.
● Encourages lymphatic drainage, sending waste out into the lymphatic system.
● pain relief and Improved flexibility - Helps relax tight jaw muscles and improves range of movement.
♡ Apply heat for 15-20 minutes, 1-3 times a day for muscle relaxation when swelling has minimised.
When used correctly, ice and heat help reduce pain, calm muscle and tissue irritation, and support a return to normal jaw function.
