When a disc injury is involved, pain is rarely just “local.”

Back pain, leg pain (often sciatic-type symptoms) and stiffness usually mean the disc is inflamed and placing pressure on a nearby nerve.

This is why many people find:
• Painkillers don’t give lasting relief
• Symptoms change day to day
• Sitting, bending or standing can all feel uncomfortable

Medication can dull pain signals but it doesn’t reduce mechanical pressure or improve how the spine is loading.

What actually helps disc-related back and leg pain:

✔ Reduce disc pressure – by improving joint movement around the area so load is shared properly
✔ Calm inflammation – ice often works better than heat in the acute phase (10 minutes on, at least an hour off, repeat as needed)
✔ Avoid forcing movement – stretching or pushing through pain can aggravate the nerve
✔ Restore balanced spinal mechanics – stiff joints above or below the disc often drive ongoing symptoms
✔ Hydration matters – discs rely on good hydration to manage pressure and inflammation

Disc recovery is often not linear. Good days and bad days are common that doesn’t mean it isn’t healing. What matters is whether symptoms are gradually becoming more stable.

The key is identifying what’s still putting pressure on the disc and nerve and addressing that first before jumping into strengthening or stretching programmes.

If back pain, leg pain and stiffness keep coming back despite “doing all the right things,” an assessment can help identify what’s being missed and guide you safely forward.

Pregnant and dealing with aches, pains or discomfort that don’t feel “minor”?
You’re not imagining it and you’re not doing anything wrong.

As your body adapts to pregnancy, posture changes, ligaments soften and joints work harder than usual. That’s why so many mums experience back pain, pelvic pressure, sciatica or disrupted sleep.

Pregnancy-specific chiropractic care is gentle, supportive and tailored to you.
The goal isn’t to “fix” you, it’s to help your body adapt more comfortably as it changes.

✨ Many mums tell us they feel:
• Less tension and joint stress
• More ease in daily movement
• Better sleep and comfort
• More confidence in their changing body

If this resonates, you’re not alone and support is available.

Save this for later, or share with a mum-to-be who might need reassurance 🤍

When it's cold outside, it's easy to forget about drinking enough water.

Water is good for overall health - and that includes your spine.

The reason water is important for your back is that the spinal discs contain up to 85% water. This explains more.

When you hear the word 'arthritis', do you tend to think of pain, stiffness and old age? If so, you'll be heartened to know that the reality can be much less daunting.

Arthritis simply means inflammation of a joint. So, you might not even know you have arthritis until an X-ray shows it.

During pregnancy, some women develop pelvic pain, which can be very uncomfortable.

It's caused by a stiffness of your pelvic joints or the joints moving unevenly at either the back or front of your pelvis.

Although it's common, there's no need to suffer. This explains how a chiropractor can help you stay pain-free during pregnancy: https://chislehurstchiro.com/pregnancy-paeds/pregnancy/
