As an example of a working contact we've already established in Ukraine, in the very first days of war we were introduced to Oksana who is currently volunteering in Chernivtsi. In her previous life (that is before 24/02/2022) Oksana was a practicing lawyer. We learned about her via Anya's former boss Valentina, with whom she worked before she moved to London. Anya's former boss is now working with her husband, helping collect medicines from the Romanian border and getting it to hospitals in Kharkiv and other cities in need. Valentina has put us in touch with Oksana who runs the operations.
The system is as follows: Volunteers purchasing the medicine and personal hygiene products (sanitary pads, bandages etc) in western Ukraine and they also purchase the more serious medicine (the medicines that are now impossible to find in Ukraine) just across the border in Romania. There is now a green corridor between Romania and Ukraine for humanitarian needs.
On day 1 as a test run we wired her £100 (which is just over 4000 UAH). She spent it on medicine and put it on the train to Kharkiv the same day.
On day 2, a few of our friends chipped in and we collected £350 (just over 13,000UAH). These were spent again the same day and we had a full stack of receipts showing exactly what was purchased.
For tomorrow Anya agreed with the UK charity she works for, that they will send her £1,000 that she will spend again on medicine for Kharkiv hospitals (prenatal centers, hospitals and maternity wards).
Looking beyond tomorrow - we need to source more financing for this pipeline of supplies. Hence we started this fundraiser.
