Someone asked me “Why is women’s health so bad?”
This is a complex issue. Experiences are varied across the board. I know some very fantastic compassionate O&G consultants who practice medicine in a different way to what is currently in the press.
These videos are my opinion to try bring understanding but also HOPE. We can critique- but in place of cutting down we need to plant and grow something new in place of the old. I know of many groups pushing for change, lobbying parliament, these things take time, effort and funding.
I left the NHS for various reasons, but one major reason was I wanted to practice “Individualised Care”. This approach goes beyond following guidelines designed to manage treating a mass population- and uses integrative holistic medicine not only to TREAT, but also PREVENT poor health.
This is how I have redefined women’s health in my medical practice, but back when I was a GP and I had a huge workload and little to no training around menopause and women’s intimate health, I’m sure I could have dismissed symptoms women presented to me too. But now I know better.
Taking ownership: sincerely, for all the women out there who have suffered and/or are still suffering I’m truly sorry our healthcare has been found wanting.
What am I doing about it? I promise to use my voice and my privileged position as a doctor to advocate for women wherever I can and to demand equality and supportive women’s health where you are heard and feel valued.
Together we can build hope for a better way for women’s health.
