Someone asked me “Why is women’s health so bad?”

This is a complex issue. Experiences are varied across the board. I know some very fantastic compassionate O&G consultants who practice medicine in a different way to what is currently in the press.

These videos are my opinion to try bring understanding but also HOPE. We can critique- but in place of cutting down we need to plant and grow something new in place of the old. I know of many groups pushing for change, lobbying parliament, these things take time, effort and funding.

I left the NHS for various reasons, but one major reason was I wanted to practice “Individualised Care”. This approach goes beyond following guidelines designed to manage treating a mass population- and uses integrative holistic medicine not only to TREAT, but also PREVENT poor health.

This is how I have redefined women’s health in my medical practice, but back when I was a GP and I had a huge workload and little to no training around menopause and women’s intimate health, I’m sure I could have dismissed symptoms women presented to me too. But now I know better.

Taking ownership: sincerely, for all the women out there who have suffered and/or are still suffering I’m truly sorry our healthcare has been found wanting.

What am I doing about it? I promise to use my voice and my privileged position as a doctor to advocate for women wherever I can and to demand equality and supportive women’s health where you are heard and feel valued.

Together we can build hope for a better way for women’s health.

Medical misogyny - who gave doctors the right to be dismissive? Let me tell you... We doctors undergo rigorous training, 5-6 years of undergrad, exams, VIVAS, DOPS, OSCEs... Then 2 years of foundation training, hellish generalist rotations. Postgrad training's no cakewalk either - assessments, observations, patient feedback, appraisals, portfolio requirements... between 4-8 years rigorous training depending on speciality.
We aren't born dismissive, but we do inherit outdated attitudes.

Let's address the inadequacies together!

Look what arrived!!! Thank you @ Penguin Publishers for my copy!!! Nutrition is Such an important often overlooked aspect to our health! What we put into and onto our bodies has consequences. The fabrics, chemicals, preservatives and foods we eat associated with modern life and marketed as “Healthy” may actually be playing havoc with your immune system and driving inflammation processes. The author Kate Llewellyn-Waters has personally helped me understand the complexities of nutritional support in menopause. I cannot wait to read this!!!

ADHD brains are different. We have dopamine deficiency and therefore less dopamine receptors (DAT). Knowing how to maximise your dopamine naturally is super important to give us all a fighting chance of making it through each day. But also our “fight & flight” vs “rest & digest” autonomic system can be unbalanced. ADHDers tend to be in constant Fight and flight and struggle to switch off and enter rest. The brain and body is loud and tense. We can take a snapshot of this with HRV testing and measure “available energy” “adaptability to stress” and make supportive adjustments using natural nutrition, diet and lifestyle to rebalance and improve factors like falling asleep easier, having good quality sleep, not feeling burnt out all the time and reducing the inflammatory disorders associated with ADHD by utilising an anti-inflammatory diet.

Women supporting women is very real for me. I don’t just pay lip service because it looks good for my brand. I’m into REAL grass roots female leadership to support others coming through. We have enough mean girl jealousy energy in this world. We have enough people blocking others in order to maintain their positions of power. We have had enough of patriarchy. We have had enough of misogyny.

“Let’s call for women pioneers, leaders, and those who have broken through barriers to give back and empower the next generations rising”.

I tell my children all the time “let my ceiling be your floor”. Meaning. Learn from my mistakes, learn from my successes. Build from my foundations and all the hard lessons I have learned.

If you can I urge you to support donate money, give your time, give your support share your wisdom and life lessons to help empower young women to live a brighter future- while at the same time challenging business culture, stereotypes and gender and race inequality.
