“Eating spicy or acidic food causes your breastfed baby’s reflux.”

Not true!

Breast milk is made from nutrients absorbed into the parent’s bloodstream, not directly from the stomach contents. While small aromatic compounds from foods like garlic, cinnamon, or mint can subtly influence the milk’s flavour, the spicy heat or acidity that might irritate a baby’s stomach does not transfer.

Here’s why:
During digestion, food is broken down into basic nutrients (proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals) which enter the bloodstream. Whole food particles don’t pass into breast milk, only these digested components and some flavour molecules.

Blaming a mother’s diet without evidence can lead to:
• Unnecessary guilt and self-blame
• Unwarranted dietary restrictions
• Increased anxiety around eating
• Delayed identification of the true cause
• Premature discontinuation of breastfeeding

Let’s not add more guilt to motherhood. Telling a mother her baby’s reflux is caused by what she eats only adds stress and may lead her to stop breastfeeding earlier than she intended. Let’s offer support, not unnecessary restrictions and help families find real, evidence-based solutions.

Breastfeeding is an art, not a science! It’s crucial to remember that not all babies will latch 'perfectly' in the same way. Common myths like needing to roll the top lip for a deep latch on the breast or bottle can lead to unnecessary concerns. If your baby struggles, be sure to seek assessment from trained professionals who can evaluate tongue function. Embrace the unique feeding journey with proper support and care.

The myth that tongue-tied babies can't stick out their tongues is a common misconception. While it may seem reassuring, not an accurate way to rule out a diagnosis. There are many functions required of the tongue during breastfeeding, bottle feeding and eating solid food. Tongue movement is complex, with eight muscles playing vital roles in sync with each other.
Being able to stick out their tongue doesn't guarantee proper function. If feeding issues persist, it's crucial to consult a trained professional for an accurate assessment. Stay informed and empowered on your feeding journey.

Upper lip ties often confuse parents, as they’re not actual 'ties' but rather a normal structure that varies in appearance from one baby to another. They matter in feeding only when a tongue tie or oral dysfunction is at play.
This is because babies are unable to compensate for the restricted tongue movement by 'clinging' to the breast or bottle with their top lip.
The solution to this is to improve the function of the tongue rather than dividing the lip tie. Let's break the myths and empower parents with knowledge.

Before and after photos can truly tell a story of transformation. It’s a privilege to collaborate with Pitter Patter Tot's to support this little one through complex feeding challenges. With gentle, targeted oral exercises, we worked to reduce muscle tension, allowing the tongue to lift and reveal the full extent of the tongue tie. This is a crucial step as we can only "release" what we can see. Our holistic approach takes the time to address the root causes of oral dysfunction, guiding the infant’s journey toward a successful, "release-ready" tongue tie – not just a simple snip, but a step toward comfort and progress.

There have been no symptoms post-treatment. Immediately after having his tongue tie cut, he cried for no more than a few minutes on each occasion and was feeding straight away. Baby-led weaning has been great fun for Rory and all those involved, and he loves his newfound tongue movement as evidenced by the raspberry blowing.

The moral of the story
Tongue tie divisions are not a 'quick fix' and there is no such thing as a 'slight tongue-tie'. This family worked tirelessly and what an amazing job they have done!

You are never discharged from The Natal Network, and we have had the pleasure of seeing this baby multiple times since this last photo. Oral function can fluctuate, so follow-up and open access is key.

Huge thanks to this family for sharing your journey!

Emily at The Natal Network assessed Rory, and he scored a 2/14 on the Oral Dysfunction Scale. Anything above 11 is classified as optimal function. Emily looked at Rory breastfeeding and explained that due to his tongue tie, he was using his jaw to keep his tongue around my ni**le, and he was struggling to latch. Emily also noticed that I was very engorged, making it even trickier. A plan was made for Rory and me to maintain my milk supply while he struggled to latch, I had decided that I actually really wanted to solely breastfeed Rory.

Due to Rory’s tongue tie being so tight, a division could not be performed at this first appointment, and we were given exercises to help make some space. I was advised to continue trying to latch Rory and have lots of skin-to-skin contact to help encourage him to feed on me.

We performed Rory’s mouth exercises daily, and a division of Rory’s frenulum was possible 3 weeks later. The procedure was quick and went well; however, behind the tongue tie was a thick muscle, which meant we needed to continue the exercises.

We continued with the oral exercises for a few weeks and returned for a follow-up appointment. Slowly, Rory had started to feed and latch well, so another division was not required, until he became poorly with a cold, which afterward, he had become fussy about feeding. I made an appointment with The Natal Network, and Emily reassessed Rory. She found that the thick muscle after the first division had thinned out, and more of the tongue tie could be divided.

We had the option to leave it be and see how Rory got on or complete the procedure. We decided to have the division. Just a few hours after the procedure, Rory was latching and feeding well again without fussing.
