Happy International Women’s Day ✨

Today we’d like to share some short stories of the women who were important female figures in podiatry. Both in history & still in today’s modern society.

“The success of every woman should be an inspiration to another.”

🦶🏼 Catherine Norrie & Margaret Swanson were sisters who inspired many pupils; choosing to share their knowledge in the curriculum of Chiropody.

As founding members of the first Society of Chiropodists in this country, the pair founded the Edinburgh Foot Clinic in 1924.

“There is no limit to what we, as women, can accomplish.”

🦶🏼 The bar was set pretty high when F***y Potter - The First Lady of Podiatry, was at the very height of her profession during the mid-nineteenth century. During a time when women had few rights, she became a Podiatrist to nobility and royalty; including Queen Victoria. Having trained both her sons in the profession; this led to the founding of the College of Podiatry.

🎅🏼 Keep your feet Merry this Christmas by following our top tips:

💧 Damp feet are prone to bacterial and viral infections. Treat yourself to warm Epsom salt foot baths throughout the colder weather, and dry your feet thoroughly after. Pay special attention to the areas in between the toes.

🥾 Wear well-insulated winter boots/shoes that fit comfortably and are not too tight, alongside thermal or thick socks to keep your feet warm in the winter. Tight footwear can decrease blood flow, increasing the risk of frostbite, or flaring up conditions such as Chilblains and Raynaud’s. Shoes with the correct arch support and cushioning can also prevent any foot pain or discomfort.

🧴Cold weather can lead to dry skin and/or cracked heels. Moisturise your feet regularly, especially after bathing. We recommend using a Urea based product such as our CCS or Dermatonic Range.

🧽 Exfoliate - Grab an emery board and debride that dry skin away, at least once a week.

💅🏽 Regular and long application of nail polish can result in thin and brittle nails, in turn leading to fungal and bacteria infections. Winter is the prime time to take a break.

✂️ Regularly trim your toenails to avoid ingrown toenails and discomfort.

🩸Proper hydration contributes to overall skin health, including your feet and staying active helps the blood circulate; maintaining warmth.

🦶🏼 We suggest seeing us twice a year, especially if you don’t have a particular issue; however we are also here to offer advice in between appointments!

📣 POLITE NOTICE - CANCELLATIONS 📣

We often shrug uncomfortable conversations off; however, we feel it’s important to highlight that; small businesses and self-employed contractors aren’t always considered fairly in the world of trade. That’s why we put in place certain policies to protect our business, like our Cancellation Policy.

WHY DO WE HAVE A CANCELLATION POLICY?

❕Our overheads and wages still need to be paid. Even if you think you’re being helpful rescheduling an appointment, last minute notice still results in multiple appointment slots being taken up at the same time, whilst the business loses profit.

❕Other clients miss out on appointment slots and the opportunity to receive the care they need. Cancellations mean we don’t get to meet new people or reduce our extensive waiting list.

❕No shows result in wasted time for our Pods who are eagerly waiting to serve patients. Our schedules are always very particularly planned so that we can be as productive as possible. When appointments are altered or missed, it often has a knock-on effect for the whole course of the day.

❕We never want to rush your services, however if you’re late to your appointment, you may still be charged a late fee. Our Podiatrists will always endeavour to finish your treatment before the next patient arrives, however, they are only able to do so much in the allocated time, which can result in you paying double, not meeting your expectations or leaving our staff feeling disorganised and stressed.

❕Just like your hairdresser deserves to be paid for the time and resources they’d dedicated to give you the ‘look’ you want, our Podiatrists deserve to be paid for their time, knowledge and treatment.

❕Our policies are never personal... we put them in place to protect our business and self-employed contractors. This is how we make a living. We have bills to pay and families to feed as well as buying business stock, paying rent and other fees. Your time is valuable and so is ours.
