The rollout of the winter flu vaccine campaign to protect some of the most vulnerable people in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight begins next week. The NHS 10-year health plan, published recently, commits to a shift from sickness to prevention and the local vaccine campaign will continue to play an important part in protecting as many vulnerable people as possible before winter viruses start to spread.
From 1 September, pregnant women, 2-3 year olds, primary and secondary aged school children, and children in clinically at-risk groups are eligible to receive their flu vaccine.
Pregnant women and parents of 2-3 year olds are being urged to contact their GP practice to make an appointment. Children who are at primary and secondary school will receive their vaccines at school.
For most toddlers the flu vaccine will be in the form of two quick squirts of spray up the nose, which is often described as a ‘little tickle’ and carried out at your GP practice.
Many eligible people will be invited in for their vaccine by their GP practice, but anyone who is eligible can book directly via the National Booking System, by calling 119, or via the NHS App.
For any school-aged children who aren’t currently in an educational setting, parents and carers will be contacted by the School Aged Immunisation Service or they can contact their GP directly.
If you’re not sure if you or your child has a condition that means you’re eligible for the vaccination, or you need help with booking an appointment, then the NHS Hampshire and Isle of Wight COVID-19 Vaccination Helpline team will be able to help by calling 0300 561 0018.
