Scissors Level 1

Scissors, or knee folds, are another classic Pilates exercise with several variations that make it suitable for all abilities.

Find your centre, then float one leg up into tabletop, i.e. both your knee and hip held at a right angle. Pause, then lower the foot back to the mat. Keep your pelvis steady and alternate legs. The further away you tap your foot from your body, the harder you make it for yourself.

Our 3rd beginner level Pilates exercise is the double leg stretch. The name 'double leg' makes more sense when we get to the advanced levels, but at this stage your moving one leg at the same time as both arms.

Find your centre. As you extend one leg along the mat, your arms come over your head to the floor behind. Aim to time both movements so both arms and leg reach full extension at the same time. As you return the leg to the stsrt position, round your arms back to your side. You've got a few more body parts to think about here, so it's that little bit harder to focus on controlling your centre!

A one leg stretch has 5 levels and this is a nice way of starting to move your limbs while trying to maintain your 'centre'.

Find your centred position. Extend one leg out, sliding the heel along the mat then return it back up to the start position. Alternate legs and try to maintain your centre throughout.

A lot of people will have a bit of a 'hip tip' when swapping legs. The hardest part of this exercise from a control perspective is the point where you take your weight off of the static leg and shift your weight onto the leg you have just returned to the start position. This is when you need to be most mindful of using your inner core muscles to keep your pelvis stable.
