Check their footwear. It might be the simplest change you make. After spending years encouraging older adults into proper supportive trainers, I’ve seen the difference good shoes make.

That stylish but unsupportive slip-on, those flat plimsolls or thin ballet pumps? They look lovely but they’re working against balance and stability.

The evidence is clear: footwear significantly impacts fall risk. What makes a difference? A high-traction rubber sole with deep tread patterns that grip on tile, hardwood, carpet and pavement. A low heel—ideally under 1.75 inches. Secure lacing, straps, or buckles so your shoe stays put with each step. A firm, supportive midsole. Brands like Asics, Skechers with Arch Fit, New Balance, and Hush Puppies all offer excellent options that combine grip and stability.

Small changes like this can make a big difference to balance, confidence and independence.

We’re really pleased to share that the Dyer Street Clinic has been awarded the Patient Partnership Quality Mark (PPQM).

The PPQM recognises clinics that demonstrate a genuine commitment to patient partnership, transparency, and continual improvement. It reflects high standards around clinical practice, and how we involve patients in shaping the service.
