The Law Society has published some interesting information about the update to burial, cremation and funerary methods in the UK. The report seeks to update and tidy up burial law, address what to do about burial space in the UK in a sensitive way and to resolve what to do about cremation of pacemaker wearers. It also seeks clarity over what funeral directors should do with uncollected remains.

We welcome the announcement from Health Secretary Wes Streeting MP on plans to lead on the regulation of the funeral sector.

For families, this matters. Everyone deserves to know their loved one will be treated with dignity, respect and care and that those who fall short will be held to account.

For our profession, it’s equally important that any changes recognise the reality: the vast majority of funeral professionals uphold the highest standards every day, supporting people through their most difficult moments with compassion and integrity.

We will work with Government to help shape regulation that protects the public, while standing up for the professionalism and commitment of our members.

Dignity in death isn’t optional but the standard our profession is built on

Rachel Wait in The Daily Telegraph today discusses the documents you should prepare before you die. Having these documents ready will make it easier for your loved ones to sort out your affairs and will ensure that your wishes are met.
According to Wait 53% of people aged 50-64 don't have a Will. In addition to making a Will she suggests you also consider the following: Pension expression of wish form as pension benefits can't be inherited. A Letter of Instruction to outline your wishes for your funeral, Power of Attorney in case you lose mental capacity, IHT400 form for inheritance tax. You should also gather together proof of ownership documents for your biggest assets, details of your savings account (although not the PIN) and marriage and/or divorce documents. Talking about death now and adopting an organised approach will make things easier for your family when the time comes.
