𝐌𝐞𝐞𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐲 𝐌𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐞: A herb for 𝒥𝓊𝒾𝓁𝓁ℯ𝓉.

July. 𝘊𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘢 𝘴𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘲𝘶𝘢 L.. Carob.

As☀️summer gets well on its way., so too., does our botanical medicine cabinet..🍃
.Seasonal allergy..., Insect repellent.,Sunscreen..

Nothing.., is going to get the better of our well-earned break this year- we got this totally covered!!

So, we (probably) know by now, what to definitely pack..., Aloe, Tea tree, Coconut Oil..., we could do this stuff with our eyes closed!

The best thing about my summer travels abroad., is that I may often [usually] meet up with some old, yet familiar friends 🌱, that I don’t often see outside of my usual city window 🪟.

Meet Carob, 𝘊𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘢 𝘴𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘲𝘶𝘢 L. …a master antioxidant, super nutrient-rich, anti-inflammatory., that makes this botanical beautifully reliable for some general health maintenance., and even more focused lifestyle goal setting.

𝐌𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐇𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬: Anti-hyperglycaemic, Antioxidant, Antibacterial, Anti-obesity, Phytobiotic...

𝐏𝐡𝐲𝐭𝐨 𝐇𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬: Flavonoid's, most abundantly quercetin and myricetin rhamnosides. Other flavanols kaempferol, and their glycosidic derivatives are also present.

Nutritionally, 𝘊. 𝘴𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘲𝘶𝘢 is a rich source of dietary fibers, amino acids, potassium, sodium, iron, copper, manganese and zinc.

Numerous health benefits are associated with a high component found in the carob., that is of a promising anti-diabetic potential, of D-pinitol. The natural compound is known to have positive associations to improving regulation of insulin through both insulin-mimetic, and sensitising activity..

…. we don’t [𝘢𝘭𝘸𝘢𝘺𝘴] just pick this stuff off tree’s 🌳 ..

🤦‍♀️ No., actually there are valid frameworks and bases in which we 𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘣𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘴., build our vast pharmacopoeia of neuro-phytomedicines for the cognitive health, and the dementia conditions. And when I say vast., I mean 𝑖𝑚𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑠𝑒. 🤷🏽‍♀️.

Existing knowledge must be scrupulously considered for potential leads., that we hope will eventually introduce us to the futures’ curative treatment for the neurodegenerative diseases, such as dementia and Alzheimer’s.

📚📑📖

For 55m people worldwide who have dementia today., there is new knowledge out there to be found too...🧐

Helping to prevent cognitive decline with plants, and supporting the dementia diagnosis with a little help from neuro-phytopharmacy ...

𝐌𝐞𝐞𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐲 𝐌𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐞: A herb for January.
𝐴𝑙𝑏𝑖𝑧𝑖𝑎 𝑗𝑢𝑙𝑖𝑏𝑟𝑖𝑠𝑠𝑖𝑛. Tree of Happiness.

Cold and dark mornings of January.

If you have found your mood is particularly low in the last few days., then you’re not alone. In fact, the third Monday of January is looming., typically known as ‘Blue Monday’ and is widely termed the saddest day of the year.

However., whilst we let go of 2023., we look to the promise of the new year and the opportunity for embracing this temporary retreat, until we feel rejuvenated enough to emerge through the surface, and ready for action in Spring.

Thankfully, there are practical things that we can do to make this process both nourishing and enjoyable.

My favourite things usually start with, or involve the word nature., and connecting with nature is [as always…] going to be first foundation for any medicines that I consider for promoting any kind of healing, and/ or that is worth sharing.

Once the terrain is created for our star herb for January to work its medicinal action at its best., meet 𝐴𝑙𝑏𝑖𝑧𝑖𝑎 𝑗𝑢𝑙𝑖𝑏𝑟𝑖𝑠𝑠𝑖𝑛... 🌳

𝐌𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐇𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬: Antioxidant, Anxiolytic, Immune-modulating, Neuroprotective...

𝐏𝐡𝐲𝐭𝐨 𝐇𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬: : Discovery of saponin JC1 appears to be the active constituent for anxiolytic as well as anti-insomnia effects.

Flavanoid and antioxidant pathways are found to be protective against apoptosis of neurons induced by oxidative stress in both short-term sleep deprivation, and insomnia.

Saponins and alkaloids found to be the main bioactive component responsible for positive cognitive effects, in particularly in memory deficits that is due to sleep disruption.

Pre., Pro., Post., …and 𝘗𝘩𝘺𝘵𝘰biotics. So., that is the drill😌.

Research suggests that certain microbial strains of gut bacteria may indeed be able to influence various aspects of sleep health.

But can we really improve our sleep and some of the related things that are most likely to keep us awake at night., by targeting our gut health through pre., pro., and postbiotics 🤔 ?

The link between the gut and our sleep, includes complex associations toward various metabolic actions, as well as in maintaining the protective gut-barrier and our overall intestinal balance..., 💪potentially through anti-inflammatory, nutritive or antimicrobial properties.

These connect our cognitive and emotional brain areas with gut functions.. and is so becoming increasingly considered as a therapeutic target for a range of conditions including anxiety, PTSD and insomnia.

So., there may be various pathways for phytobiotics to be able to exert their therapeutic properties to improve some of the often-related contributing factors., to a better-quality sleep 😴. Now, what about selecting the most appropriate plant constituents that we can most effectively target sleep health, directly through phyto-psychobiotics 🌱, or by promoting the neuroprotective effects via improvement of the microbiome?

The various ways to improve the population and diversity of the gut microbiome., include incorporating whole-grain and plant-based foods within the diet 🥕., inclusive of those vegetables and polyphenols... all of which., just so happen to be very close to the Herbalists’ heart 🤍 .

We have termed these plant medicines., phytobiotics🌱.

This has created the enquiry for the huge potential of pre-, pro-, and postbiotic treatments, that may help to improve the onset, quality and latency of sleep by targeting the microbiome, or health of the gastrointestinal system.🧐

We have covered so much... let’s wrap up the 3 parts...

1. First we have looked to the fundamentals., what exactly is the connection between the gut and the brain anyway 🧠?

2. Then., we unpacked the pre., pro., and postbiotic fascination a little., if., and how exactly they are likely be able to help with these {unrelated} conditions📖🔬📚.

3. Now finally, let’s go plant-based [at least for the studies anyway...,] that will help us to decide whether there really is a place for the phyto-gut target in herbal health, and for the related sleep medicine 🌿😴🍃.
