I am Melanie Smith and I am a registered Nutritionist with the Association for Nutrition in the UK. I am also studying to be a counsellor and I have completed my level 3 certificate in counselling studies and I am currently on the level 4 diploma course. I am not a qualified counsellor yet, but studying counselling has helped me develop my listening skills and become more empathic, as well as bein

g able to work with my clients without any judgement. I also have a BSc (Hons) Nutrition as well as a BA (Hons) Health Studies. I can see you in the Broadstone Clinic face to face, but after the pandemic, I realised that it is just as easy and convenient to see clients online. I have an autoimmune disease called Crohn's disease so I enjoy working with clients with inflammatory bowel disease, gut issues and just wanting to eat better to improve their health. Head over to my website to book a free 15 minute chat to see if I can help you.

Food is one of the most powerful tools you have to balance your hormones. If you’ve ever felt unsure about what to eat for PCOS, you’re not alone. There’s a lot of conflicting information out there, but the truth is simple, you don’t need restriction, detoxes, or cutting out entire food groups. You need nourishment that works with your body, not against it.

Talk to me and we can explore how to eat in a way that supports your hormones, your energy, and your wellbeing.

Grated Tofu: The High-Protein Game Changer You Didn’t Know You Needed!

I have been cutting my tofu into cubes or scrambling them for years, but this is now my favourite way to cook tofu. Now you can buy tofu already pressed, you don't need to press it yourself anymore.

It cooks up crispy, light, and full of flavour, perfect for adding plant-based protein to your favourite dishes.

If you’ve never tried grating tofu, this one’s for you.

Grate your pre-pressed tofu with a cheese grated (my daughter chops hers into small pieces with a knife). Mix the tofu in a bowl with soya sauce, paprika, chili powder and salt and pepper. Spread on a baking sheet that has baking paper on it as it can stick, and drizzle some olive oil over the tofu and mix it up so everything is coated. Bake in the oven for 20 mins on about 180 degrees Celsius fan forced until your desired crispiness.

I have also just used taco seasoning to use in tacos. Lovely!

New Dietary Guidance for Constipation from the British Dietetic Association (BDA).

The BDA has just released evidence-based dietary guidelines for managing chronic constipation in adults.

Some specific foods and drinks were found to be helpful: for example, eating 2-3 kiwifruits a day, drinking high mineral content water, and including rye bread were highlighted.

Interestingly: the review found insufficient evidence to support the long-standing general advice of simply “eat a high-fibre diet” or using senna supplements for constipation.

Supplements such as certain probiotic strains, psyllium fibre, and magnesium oxide received some support, though the overall evidence quality is still limited.

💤❤️ Did you know your heart loves a good night’s sleep?

Quality sleep isn’t just about feeling rested—it’s one of the most powerful ways to protect your heart. Poor sleep can raise stress hormones, blood pressure, and even your risk for heart disease.

✨ Heart-Healthy Sleep Tips:

Aim for 7–9 hours each night

Keep a regular sleep schedule (even on weekends)

Limit caffeine after 2 PM

Create a calm, screen-free bedtime routine

Your heart works 24/7 for you—give it the rest it deserves.

👉 Save this post to remind yourself that sleep is self-care.

Have you ever had a day where your stomach feels fine but your head is a foggy, drained mess? You're not imagining it. It’s real, and your gut could be to blame.

Here’s what often happens:

Uneven meals → Your blood sugar wobbles → Your gut microbiome loses balance → inflammation starts → brains cells feel the difference.

Stress messes with digestion → slows gut transit → your microbiome gets grumpy → your energy and mood follow suit.

Skipping fibre and fermented foods starves those good gut bugs → they can’t help produce brain‑supporting compounds like GABA & serotonin.

✨ How to actually fix this:
Aim to “eat the rainbow” at each meal – varied plants for microbial diversity.

Add one serving of fermented foods (yoghurt, kefir, sauerkraut) to support gut–brain connection.

Choose whole grains (preferably oats or barley) – they feed fibre-loving bacteria.

Take 5 mins to breathe before and after eating – stress reduction = digestion boost.

Had a big weekend? It’s okay — you don’t need to “undo” anything. 💛

One indulgent weekend doesn’t ruin your progress. You don’t need to punish yourself with extra workouts or restrict your meals. Instead, here’s how to get back on track with ease and self-kindness:

✨ Hydrate — water first, always.
🍳 Nourish — focus on whole foods and balanced meals.
🚶‍♀️ Move — get outside, stretch, or take a walk.
🧠 Reset — let go of guilt and get back into your routine.

Progress is built on consistency, not perfection. One weekend doesn’t define your journey. You’ve got this. 💪

Think you’re eating “healthy” but still feeling off? You might not be fueling your body enough — especially if you're active, stressed, or chasing wellness goals. Watch for these red flags:

1️⃣ Constant fatigue or brain fog
2️⃣ Intense cravings (especially at night)
3️⃣ Cold hands and feet — all the time
4️⃣ Hair thinning or brittle nails
5️⃣ Irregular or missing periods (for women)

Undereating doesn’t always mean skipping meals — it can mean not getting enough overall. Your body needs energy to thrive, not just survive.

✨ Nourishment > restriction
✨ More food ≠ less progress

Let’s fuel your body with intention 💪

🚫 CARBS DON’T MAKE YOU FAT

Quick science: Weight gain comes from a calorie surplus, not a specific macronutrient.

“Yes, even bread, rice, and pasta can be part of a healthy diet. 🍞🍝🍚”

Common mistake: People blame carbs when the real issue might be portion sizes, added sugars, or ultra-processed foods.

“Ever cut carbs and gained the weight back? Let’s talk about why! Drop a 🍠 in the comments if you love carbs!”
