Celebrating 60 years of Light on Yoga 🧡

Referred to as the "bible" of modern yoga, Light on Yoga has served as the source book for generations of yoga students around the world. This year marks the 60th anniversary of it's official UK and international publication date in 1966.

In tribute, we’ve revisited our archives and are highlighting a wonderful piece, The Beginnings of Light on Yoga, by the late Beatrice Harthan, whose crucial efforts helped bring Light on Yoga to publication. B.K.S. Iyengar was eternally grateful.

This is an extract from a letter to her:
”I am grateful to you. But for you I would not have come in contact with Mr. Yorke. You are the instrument really for this book to take that shape. Much credit and merit of this book goes to you.”

SEE LINK BELOW to read The Beginnings of Light on Yoga. This article is taken from Dipika, The Iyengar Yoga London Maida Vale Journal, Issue No.48, July 2016.

Light on Yoga can be purchased at the studio, or you are welcome to enjoy our copy before or after your class.

The AI industry — especially large companies like OpenAI, Google, Meta, and their allies — are aggressively lobbying and influencing political processes as public pressure for regulation grows.

They’re building a powerful political apparatus to influence laws, silence critics, weaken regulation, and shape public policy to their advantage, even as real harms and public concern escalate.

The industry has hired experienced political strategists (e.g., Chris Lehane) and established connections with politicians from both major parties to influence policy.

Lobbying efforts include sending texts to constituents, legal threats (e.g., claiming local regulation would harm the AI industry), and extensive PR to shape political agendas.

These efforts aim to prevent regulation and guardrails that advocates want, especially safety laws regarding content, children, copyright, data-center costs, water and energy use which the industry is currently pouring billions of dollars into expanding over the next 5 years.

The AI industry seems to be working to block widespread awareness of growing evidence linking some AI chatbots to emotional dependency, harmful guidance, and increased su***de risk among children and teens.

Industry leaders are targeting and silencing those raising concerns about safety, accountability, and the ethics of deploying powerful technologies without robust protections.

Lawmakers have proposed bills to protect people from harms linked to AI (e.g., data center energy costs, harmful chatbot content), but powerful tech lobbying has weakened or killed some measures.

AI industry actors are creating and funding super PACs with hundreds of millions of dollars aimed at influencing elections and legislative outcomes.

These groups use big-money political tactics similar to those seen in the crypto industry, targeting candidates and campaigns to protect industry interests.

There are reports of coordinated ad campaigns, social media efforts, and political pressure designed to make it difficult for candidates to support stricter AI oversight.

Nigella Lawson has been officially announced as the new judge of The Great British Bake Off. in an interview with , she talks about over the years, exercise has helped the 66-year-old maintain her health and wellbeing. ‘I do yoga three times a week,’ she told Good Housekeeping. ‘I have to do something I enjoy, otherwise I wouldn’t do it. The older I get, the more I realise I have got to do lots of stretching. So even if I’m not doing yoga, I make myself do lots of stretching.’

Nigella favours Iyengar yoga, that highlights precision and correct positioning when performing postures, often using props like blocks and belts as support. For her, fitness is as much about overall wellbeing as it is about physical results.

‘As you get on in life, you value feeling well as opposed to looking well,’ she’s said

“Yoga certainly makes you feel great, and you want to carry on feeling great.”

Most mistakes in life don’t come from bad intentions —
they come from fast reactions driven by anger, fear, ego, or impulse.

🔥 Anger makes you speak too quickly.
😰 Fear makes you choose safety over truth.
⚡ Impulse makes you act before you understand.

And once words are spoken or actions are taken, they cannot be undone.

🌿 Power lives in the pause.

That small space between what happens and how you respond
is where wisdom quietly waits.

🕊️ In the pause: • You breathe instead of explode
• You observe instead of assume
• You respond instead of react
• You protect your peace instead of feeding regret

Pausing doesn’t mean weakness.
Pausing means self-mastery.

⏸️ A calm pause can save: • relationships
• reputations
• opportunities
• years of unnecessary suffering

Most people rush and regret.
Few pause and prevail.

🐢 Slow down to speed up.
Because clarity moves faster than chaos.
Because wisdom travels further than impulse.

Next time life pushes your buttons —
pause.

That pause might be the difference between
a reaction you regret
and a response that changes everything.
