Christmas Joy - Not for everyone
For many of us Christmas is the best time of the Year the most joyous time. We get excited with all the hassle and bustle, the organising and preparing, the planning and shopping.
We looking forward to meet with friends and family, drink and eat to excess and forget over the holiday period our work and worries.
For others, it is the opposite; people who are suffering from mental health illness can feel overwhelmed, become more anxious or more depressed over this time. The stress and expectations from other to be all happy and jolly around friends and family can have negative impact on their health and well-being.
Here are some tips that could help you survive
Speak to a family member or friend about how you’re feeling. It is often the case that a problem shared is a problem halved, and they may be able to shield you from the expectations of the season.
Avoid alcohol and drugs - you may want to take these substances to try and make yourself feel better in the short-term, but in the long-term, they can make you feel a lot worse.
Try and be positive - write down three positive things about your life every night before going to sleep and reflect on these when you wake up in the morning
Get yourself ‘out there’ – try attending a gathering or other form of social event over Christmas, especially with your closest family and friends. People who you can trust and who know you. Go with an open mind, and you might find that you enjoy yourself

Challenge your negative thoughts - ask yourself whether your anxious thought is a ‘fact’ or an ‘opinion’. If it’s an opinion, you may be getting anxious for nothing
Breathe! Whenever you’re feeling anxious, simply breathing in and exhaling, slowly and deeply, can help your body settle down to a more natural, resting state, and reduce your feelings of anxiety.

Give yourself ME TIME, take time out for yourself’
Stop trying to please everyone – it’s OK if you don’t try to be everywhere or do everything
Set yourself a budget for Christmas shopping and stick to it
Get out your diary – try and schedule events in November and January instead of focusing them all in December
If it gets all to much seek help from the professionals, make sure you have phone numbers available to you can ring over the holiday period.
And for Family members and Friends who live with someone, or know someone who has mental health illnesses, be supportive offer time to listen.

Winter Blues or something more?

Most people feel a little down in the winter months — it's a time of year when depression and anxiety rates are on the increase. People suffering form osteo- or rheumatoid arthritis, neurological illnesses may suffer more pain, people suffering with depression or anxiety may feel an increase in their symptoms.
Seasonal changes impact our routines, we wake up and it is still dark on the way to work and when we return home its dark again. Our biological body clock is struggling to keep up with the changes.
We may change the way we sleep, eat, exercise or socialise.
Here are some tips to help you with your mood.
Go for a walks, whenever you can.
A morning walk, provide you with aerobic exercise which is always good for mental health while the natural light helps jump-start your biological clock.
Do not shift your routine to the sofa or bed.
The fact that it's dark and cold at the end of a work day isn't a good reason to ditch your gym routine. Keep staying active, and if you enjoy winter sports, bundle up and get out there.
Make an effort not to change your activity level too much.
During the darker months, continue seeing people, making dates with friends, and keeping appointments.
The Swedish and Norwegian people, who deal with their 24-hour dark days, celebrate 'mys': an annual winter tradition of getting cosy, relaxing with friends, and eating delicious food.
Eat healthy, adjust your diet to the season a hearty stew never goes a miss in this house.
During the wintertime, people notice that they’re lethargic, they’re tired and they lose some interest in things and that can be mild and subtle, or it can be more severe.”
If your symptoms persistently getting worse do not suffer in silence talk to someone, a friend, a family member or see your GP.
Please Like and share this post to support a small business…

Self-Help Books or Therapy?
I lean towards personal interactions and thrive on feedback; also I have quite a few of self-help books. Books cannot hear you; they cannot see you and they don’t see the eyes that are the windows to your soul. A book cannot tell if you happy or sad, feeling well or in pain. A book will never respond to questions it will never have a meaningful conversation with you.
A book can give us knowledge, written words can be powerful, it can help us understand why things happen, and they give us blueprints to exercises and self-help activities. Books can help people see that their specific problems and difficulties are more common and that they not the only one who feel the way they feel. A self-help book can be part of a person’s personal development, helping them with steps along the way, a book does not claim to be all someone needs and they are cheaper than counselling and therapy sessions. A good self-help book won’t tell you what to think, but can offer you an alternative way of how to think.
But what if a self-help book does not work, if it does not fulfil your expectations? When you come across a part in a book that’s difficult to understand or an exercise is advised but you find it difficult to complete.
Think about this – is it a good idea that we all learn how to drive a car simply by reading a book?
As humans we learn from birth, interacting with others. We continue through our lives to develop and thrive and change by socialising with other human beings - a therapist will probably have more of an impact upon us. This makes therapy or counsellor a more powerful tool than a self-help book.
However a bad therapist or counsellor could be more harmful than a bad written self-help book.
So I strongly believe that both should overlap.
A good therapist or counsellor is the best option.
A good self-help book is the 2nd best option.
The good thing is YOU can decide what is best for YOU.
