Dysautonomias can be primary such as POTs or Mast Cell Activation syndrome, or secondary due to Ehlers-Danlos hyper mobility syndrome. There are also many correlations with CFS/ME and some with ASD.
Stress, Trauma and post viral immune activation can also contribute to the development of a Dysautonomia.
Associated mood and behaviour disturbances, such as panic, depression and anxiety can be physiological in origin because the body is sending out signals that relate to a lack of safety internally even if there is none externally.
This is very destabilising and confusing experience. Because the symptoms are so broad and seemingly unconnected it can be very difficult to get a medical diagnosis unless the symptoms are at the more extreme end of the spectrum.
The degrees to which this might affect you can vary enormously but awareness of the ways in which it is effecting you both psychologically and physiologically is really important.
Having it understood that you aren’t making it up or ‘simply’ anxious and depressed can also be really helpful. You are not imagining your racing heart, dizziness, fatigue, pain and digestive issues because you are depressed or anxious. You are experiencing a permanent loss of a sense of safety which is very hard to live with.
Mind Body / Somatic Therapy can be part of an approach to restoring function but also and importantly in reframing your experience of yourself in the world to create a better sense of safety.
