New Therapy!
After 12 month's training with the School of Holistic Therapy in Edinburgh, and over 40 case studies.
I am delighted to be offering Somatic Trauma Therapy to people in West Cumbria.
---------‐‐------------------------------------------------------
This therapy gently guides clients to become aware of feelings and sensation within the body that have often became stuck/frozen within the body due to some traumatic or stressful event.
The body holds the memory of traumatic events that happen throughout our lives.
A traumatic or stressful event stimulates our autonomous nervous system to react with a fight or flight response where hormones are released to create a vast amount of energy to be used for survival.
If this energy is not used by the body, i.e. the person can’t fight or run away, then that energy is held/frozen in the nervous system and body structures until it can be released by the body.
This puts the system on high alert all the time, everything is seen as not safe and the person cannot relax.
This can cause a vast array of symptoms:
Low mood
Depression
Pain and tension
Emotional dysregulation
Nervous system imbalances
Low self-esteem
Exhaustion and fatigue related to stress
Feeling numb, dissociation/disconnection
Addiction/Self Harm
Sleep issues/nightmares
Somatic Trauma Therapy guides the client to safely locate the stuck energy in the body, just by becoming aware of the sensations in the body, staying with them allows the body to release the stuck energy and re-regulate it back into the body for the body to use in a positive way.
Signs of re-regulation in the body can be body shaking, changes in temperature, yawning, emotional release, sighing.
A Trauma can be defined as a deeply distressing or disturbing experience. Some common causes of trauma at any age can be:
Emotional, sexual, or physical abuse
Bullying
Assault
War, genocide, mass killings
Natural disasters
Loss of loved ones (Death/Separation/Abandonment)
Child Birth
Illness or diseases
Surgical Operations
It is not necessary to remember the event, just to release the stuck energy in the body that was caused by the event. Although when the energy is released, a memory may or may not come up for a client. So it is very important to work safely and gently, supporting clients, so they do not get overwhelmed.
