The lymphatic system is a network of vessels, lymph nodes, and organs that helps keep the body balanced, healthy, and protected.
Main functions of the lymphatic system
1. Removes waste and excess fluid
It collects excess fluid, waste products, and toxins from tissues and returns them to the bloodstream to be filtered and removed.
2. Supports the immune system
Lymph nodes filter lymph fluid and trap bacteria, viruses, and abnormal cells. They also produce immune cells (lymphocytes) that help fight infection.
3. Maintains fluid balance
Every day, several litres of fluid leak from blood vessels into tissues. The lymphatic system collects this fluid and returns it to the circulation to prevent swelling.
4. Transports fats from digestion
Special lymph vessels in the intestines absorb dietary fats and fat-soluble vitamins and transport them into the bloodstream.
5. Filters lymph through lymph nodes
The body contains hundreds of lymph nodes which act as filters, cleaning lymph fluid before it returns to circulation.
Interesting fact
The body contains more lymph fluid than blood, and unlike blood circulation, the lymphatic system does not have a pump like the heart. It relies on movement, breathing, and muscle contractions to move lymph around the body.
This is why manual lymphatic drainage massage can help stimulate lymph flow when the system is slow or overloaded.
