So..... in trying to cool off, you might be tempted to go for a nice walk in the woods or somewhere with more foliage and shade... just be aware of what ticks are, how to spot them and the disease they can transmit - Lyme Disease. Ticks may be rather gross, but understanding the symptoms of Lyme disease is incredibly important. The bullseye rash and flu like symptoms are two important symptoms to be aware of.
Pharmacies can help with insect bites (including infected bites), but if you are concerned that you may have been bitten by a tick then the GP surgery is the place to call.

Please don't forget your sunscreen! Sunburn increases your risk of skin cancer. And sunburn does not just happen on holiday - you can burn in the UK, even when it's cloudy.

Melanoma is a type of skin cancer and its main cause is ultraviolet light, which comes from the sun and sunbeds. Melanoma can spread to other areas of the body.

Use the ABCDE checklist to look for signs of melanoma on your skin – and learn when to contact your GP practice.

Dehydration

When the weather is very warm, you may be at risk of dehydration if you don’t adequately replace the fluid you lose through sweating and p*eing. Babies, children and older adults are most at risk. You can help to minimise the risk of dehydration by ensuring you drink enough to keep your p*e a pale-yellow colour. You can increase your fluid intake by eating foods that are high in liquids, such as jelly, ice cream, melon, cucumber or soup.

A yellow heat-health warning has been issued for the south of England, including North Somerset, from 10am today (Wednesday 9 July) until 10am next Tuesday 15 July 🟡

While many of us look forward to some warm, sunny weather and the chance to spend time outdoors, it’s important to remember some people struggle to cope in the heat 🌡

The Heat Health Alert system is run by the UK Health Security Agency and the Met Office. They issue alerts and guidance during hot weather to help communicate any risks to health. It's a way of making sure health and social care services, and people who are more vulnerable to the heat, can be ready and stay well.

The alerts are graded, depending on how likely it is that the forecast temperatures will be reached and the impact they might have.

The current heat-health alert is yellow 🟡 This means the warmer weather is likely to affect people who are vulnerable to the heat, including babies and young children, older people, people with underlying health conditions and people who take certain medications. Their bodies can struggle to cope with the heat and they are at greater risk.

If you know someone who might struggle with the warmer weather, please do check in with them to make sure they’ve got what they need. It only takes a few minutes of your time but will make a world of difference to them 🌎

Weight loss injections Tirzepatide (Mounjao)

It has been reported in the media today (Monday 23rd June 2025) that GP surgeries can prescribed the weight loss injection tirzepatide (also known as Mounjaro). The NHS guidelines state there is to be a phased introduction, starting with people who are at the highest risk. This is people who have a BMI over 40, and have 4 other health problems from the following list: cardiovascular disease, hypertension, obstructive sleep apnoea, high cholesterol, and type 2 diabetes.

We have approximately 25 patients who fit these criteria, and there are an estimated 70 patients across the Gordano valley PCN (this includes the practices in Pill, Portishead and Clevedon).

Prescribing tirzepatide includes regularly titrating the doses, and monthly follow ups. To ensure we can do this safely and effectively without impacting our existing services, we will be directly contacting those people who fit the criteria over the next few months to invite them onto the programme.

To calculate your BMI please go here: Calculate your body mass index (BMI) for adults - NHS

Heat Health alert for the South West issued.

To stay safe during hot weather, focus on keeping cool and hydrated. Stay indoors during the hottest part of the day, wear light, loose-fitting clothing, and drink plenty of fluids. Seek shade when outdoors and avoid strenuous activity. Regularly check on vulnerable individuals like the elderly or those with health conditions.
Here's a more detailed breakdown:
Staying Cool:
Limit exposure to direct sunlight: Avoid being outdoors between 11 am and 3 pm, the hottest part of the day.
Seek shade: When outdoors, find shade under trees or use an umbrella.
Wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing: This helps your body stay cooler by allowing air to circulate and reflecting sunlight.
Use fans and air conditioning: If available, use fans or air conditioning to help regulate indoor temperatures.
Cool showers or baths: Take cool showers or baths to help lower your body temperature.
Staying Hydrated:
Drink plenty of fluids: Water is the best choice, but you can also drink diluted fruit juice or sports drinks to replenish electrolytes.
Avoid alcohol and caffeine: These can dehydrate you.
Eat cold foods: Salads and fruits with high water content can help you stay hydrated.
Other important tips:
Monitor weather forecasts: Stay informed about heat warnings and alerts.
Check on vulnerable individuals: Offer assistance to those who may be more susceptible to heat-related illnesses.
Plan ahead: Stock up on essentials like food, water, and medications.
Be aware of symptoms of heat exhaustion and heatstroke: Seek medical attention if you or someone you know experiences symptoms like dizziness, nausea, or confusion.
